Microtransactions are more complicated in the metaverse

Pay-to-win microtransactions that give some players a clear advantage over others absolutely ruin games for those who don’t pay up. As a result, many games have opted to relegate all microtransactions to cosmetics only. These might make one’s character look cool, but don’t give them an edge in a fight. It makes sense in a competitive game, but what happens when cosmetics are the main draw?

This is a conundrum that I couldn’t get out of my head as I played Fortnite this week after buying its battle pass so my cousin could be more comfortable playing it on my PS5. I’ve played Epic Games’ battle royale more than ever this past week. During that time, I’ve noticed just how critical cosmetics are to the Fortnite experience and how most outfits and emotes are locked behind a paywall. As companies try harder and harder to turn games into metaverses, it’s time to reassess if cosmetic-only microtransactions are still acceptable.

Never-ending Easter

Over Easter weekend, my younger cousin visited me as part of the holiday celebrations. We were eventually drawn to the PS5, and I had installed Fortnite (their favorite game) on to the system so they could see the game in action on a next-gen console. While we were having fun playing it together, they pointed out that my character had the default outfit and was surprised that I hadn’t spent money buying more cosmetics.

Spending money on cosmetics immensely changed my relationship with Fortnite.

Understanding that sentiment, I spent $20 on V-Bucks to buy a skin, emote, and Chapter 3 Season 2’s battle pass. My cousin eventually left, but I didn’t stop playing Fortnite over the rest of that holiday weekend. I had just spent money on the battle pass and wanted to unlock the Prowler and Doctor Strange outfits that I had paid for, but needed to play to earn. It’s at the end of this season’s battle pass. 

Call it sunk cost fallacy, but I’ve tried to get my money’s worth out of Fortnite over the past several days. During that grind, I came to a startling realization: The cosmetics are as crucial to the Fortnite experience as the gameplay.

It wasn’t this way when I played Fortnite a bit during its early days, but now that Epic Games is turning the battle royale game into a crossover-filled metaverse, how players look is just as important as how they perform in a match.

Whether it’s in a pregame lobby with random players or a session with close friends, the outfit your Fortnite character is wearing and the emotes they use are vital aspects of the social experience. Unlocking cosmetics also serves as the backbone of Fortnite‘s progression, because one has to keep playing the game to unlock outfits or earn the currency to purchase them.

Spending money on cosmetics immensely changed my relationship with Fortnite, so I’d argue the game’s microtransactions noticeably impact the experience.

The cost of self-expression

Fortnite is a leading metaverse game now despite its humble origins, and many competitors like Manticore Games’ Core are following its lead. Cosmetics are the main things that are monetized because they supposedly don’t impact gameplay. But this approach directly contradicts statements from developers. Manticore Games CEO Frederic Descamps recently explained to Digital Trends how “the metaverse is a new place for self-expression and creativity.” Right now, a major aspect of player expression is locked behind a paywall or extremely long grind.

Developers and players now place so much value on these cosmetics that people like my cousin feel like they are missing out when they don’t have cool character outfits or emotes. I also keep playing Fortnite because of the cosmetic I paid for but can’t yet access. I’ve noticed just how much of an iron grip cosmetics have over the experience, and I expect future metaverse games to follow suit.

Due to their more positive reputation, cosmetic microtransactions aren’t as immediately noticeable or derided by players. But if you don’t pay up in Fortnite nowadays, you aren’t getting the most out of the social aspect of the game that Epic Games loves to tout. Cosmetic microtransaction might be the better of two evils when compared to pay-to-win microtransactions. Still, it feels like cosmetic-only microtransactions are becoming just as negatively intrusive in metaverse games as pay-to-win ones.

I don’t blame my cousin for wanting their characters to look special and emote uniquely or I don’t regret spending the money so he and I could have a lot of fun playing together. But it’s clear that a very significant part of the fun of Fortnite for people of all ages is locked behind a paywall and that leaves me concerned for the future of cosmetic microtransactions. These microtransactions will likely only worsen and become more prominent as more metaverse games like Fortnite continue to emphasize customization and player expression over moment-to-moment gameplay. As such, it’s not possible for me to look at cosmetics as the “good kind” of microtransactions anymore.

Fortnite’s Epic Games to pay $520 million over children’s privacy violations

The Federal Trade Commission announced that it will fine Fortnite developer Epic Games $520 million over violations of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
In a press release, FTC Chair Lina M. Khan states that "Epic used privacy-invasive default settings and deceptive interfaces that tricked Fortnite users, including teenagers and children." The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a federal court order forcing Epic Games to pay $275 million for violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act as well as an additional $245 million in refunds to customers.

Epic Games will also update Fortnite to require that voice and text communications are off by default for children and teens playing the game. U.S. Attorney General Vanita Gupta even commented as part of this announcement, stating that "this proposed order sends a message to all online providers that collecting children’s personal information without parental consent will not be tolerated." 
The FTC has gotten much stricter in regard to the video game industry recently. Earlier this month, the FTC made game industry headlines when it announced it's filing a lawsuit with Microsoft over its impending acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Although the video game industry has remained somewhat unscathed from government scrutiny for some time, that may be starting to change. The press release announcing this settlement boasts that this is "FTC’s largest refund amount in a gaming case, and its largest administrative order in history."
Still, even this settlement is really just a drop in the bucket for Epic Games, which has a valuation of about $31.5 billion as of April 2022.

The best trailer of The Game Awards 2022's Opening Act pre-show was Replaced, an indie darling that made a strong first impression with a trailer at Xbox's E3 2022 showcase. This indie game stands out because of its utterly beautiful pixel art that looks just as good, if not even better, than HD-2D games like Live A Live. Even outside of Replaced's inherent style, this is just a well-paced trailer that slowly builds up the game's atmosphere before a song needle drop that compliments the trailer showcasing the game's action and platforming. Heading into 2023, Replaced is an indie that should definitely be on your radar.

The first trailer of The Game Awards 2022's main show wasn't too shabby either. Starting with some fantastic animation made by Studio Grackle, it slowly becomes clear that this is an action-packed follow-up to one of the best game's ever made. The animation on its own would've been good enough to whet fans' appetites, but Supergiant Games also decided to show quite a bit of gameplay in the reveal trailer, affirming that Hades II will have the same smooth and satisfying combat as its predecessor.

We finally got a look at BioShock creator Ken Levine's first project in almost a decade at The Game Awards 2022, and its reveal trailer didn't disappoint. We're introduced to the main character Judas and the eccentric cast of characters they'll have to form alliances with pretty quickly, and we then get a look at the creepy sci-fi setting and gameplay that's certainly reminiscent of BioShock. While this trailer doesn't reveal much more about the game, we can't wait to see what Ken Levin has in store for us with Judas.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

There's nothing else quite like a good Star Wars trailer, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's The Game Awards 2022 trailer hits all the right notes. It not only sets the stage for a story that will be a little more intense than Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order but introduces us to new characters like mercenary Bode Akuna and awesome gameplay mechanics like dual-wielding lightsabers, riding animals, and freezing time with the Force. Ending it on a March 17 release date confirmation also proved that this great-looking game is coming much sooner than viewers may have thought.  
Death Stranding 2

Hideo Kojima is a master of releasing trailers that don't really tell players much about the game but still get the viewer very hyped. Most of the original Death Stranding's trailers were masterpieces, and Death Stranding 2's reveal trailer lives up to that quality. We see some cultists, then Lea Sedouyx playing with and then fleeing an attack with an actual baby. She fails, and we then flash to a corrupted BB tank, the game's logo, and then a conversation between her and Norman Reedus' Sam Porter Bridges. After the cast and credits of the trailer, we then get a look at Troy Baker's character, who seems to be the cultist villain of the game, as well as tentacles emerging in a BB tank. As always with new Kojima games, we're utterly intrigued.  
Crime Boss: Rockay City

Crime Boss: Rockay City's reveal trailer was memorable because of how it unveiled this first-person heist game's star-studded cast. After a quick intro introducing us to Rockay City, we get looks at Michael Madsen as Travis Baker, Kim Basinger as Casey, Damion Poitier as Nasara, Danny Trejo as The Dragon, Danny Glover as Gloves, Michael Rooker as Touchdown, Vanilla Ice as Hielo, and Chuck Norris in this smoothly edited trailer. Crime Boss: Rockay City certainly leaves a strong first impression; let's see if the gameplay lives up to that. 
Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON – Reveal Trailer
Following Geoff Keighley's introduction to this trailer, it seemed like this trailer was for a new FromSoftware game, but we couldn't be sure. The post-apocalyptic sci-fi landscapes don't look like anything the developer has made recently. Slowly, it becomes clear that it's a new Armored Core game as the game's tagline "Feed the fire. Let the last cinders burn" and PlatinumGames logo show up. The Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon announcement trailer climaxes with some awesome mecha action, getting us very hyped for FromSoftware's first project post-Elden Ring.

Fortnite Chapter 4 has completely stolen Warzone 2.0’s thunder

Although Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 reached a whopping 25 million players within five days of its launch, the shooter launched in a troubled state. It's full of bugs and controversial design choices that have pushed its community away. Since the game's release on November 16, players have expressed their disappointment with Warzone 2.0, with some community members feeling pessimistic about its future.

Fast-forward to the beginning of December 2022, and Warzone 2.0's issues seem amplified when placed next to the extraordinary Fortnite Chapter 4.
