Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak introduces a vampiric dragon

During the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak digital event, Capcom showed off a brand-new trailer featuring older monsters and new ones. The clip included the expansion’s flagship dragon, Malzeno.

Malzeno is a vampiric elder dragon that captures monsters and steals their life force. It also has the ability to inflict the Bloodblight status, which causes hunters to slowly lose their HP in a tug-of-war fashion with it. In order for hunters to regain lost HP due to Bloodblight, it seems like they’ll have to keep attacking Malzeno. If a hunter succumbs to Bloodblight, then Malzeno will use the life force to evolve into a more powerful form.

There are also three additional monsters being added to Sunbreak, including Seregios, who was the flagship creature in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Aurora Somnacanth is a new subspecies of Somnacanth that fires off a powerful ice breath instead of the usual sleep-inducing breath. The last monster is Magma Almudron, a subspecies of Almudron that specializes in fire elemental attacks.

Sunbreak also introduces Follower Quests, which allow hunters to team up with story characters to help out during hunts. They can place traps, ride monsters, and assist in recovering your health.

There are a few new quality of life changes, too. Players can now swap between two Switch skills with the Red Swap Scroll and Blue Swap Scroll, and can also avoid monster attacks while swapping skill sets via the Swap Evade mechanic. Additionally, players can now go into a wall run without first going into a wire dash first. When a monster is downed and in a mountable state, players can now choose to keep attacking it instead of riding it. The old controls and new controls can be chosen at any time in the settings menu.

Those who pre-order Sunbreak will receive a striped cat costume and loyal dog costume for their Palico and Palamute companions. There will also be three new Amiibo released, which feature Malzeno, Cayne Malzeno, and Felyne Malzeno. Nintendo will separately release a Sunbreak Edition Nintendo Switch Pro Controller with the Malzeno design on the front.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak launches worldwide on June 30 for Nintendo Switch and PC.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak isn’t loaded with content, and I love it for that
Hunters facing off against Malzeno

Returning to a game like Monster Hunter Rise is not at all like riding a bicycle. It’s a lot harder than you remember and muscle memory is not enough to save you from getting yourself knocked out.

However, I am a glutton for punishment and decided to get back into monster slaying with the newly released expansion Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. It follows in the footsteps of live service expansions before it, including the excellent Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. The new DLC brings more monsters and story content to the Switch and PC game, but it lacks some of the essential hooks that this genre usually demands.

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak DLC: All new monsters explained
Two hunters fighting a winged monster.

Every new entry in the Monster Hunter series brings a mix of new and old monsters to hunt down, carve up, and craft into your very own armor and weapons. Just like in the Pokemon franchise, it's really the monsters, not your character, that is the main attraction. Monster Hunter Rise started out with a decent-sized roster of massive beasts to keep you occupied through all the various hunter ranks, but eventually, you will become an expert hunter who knows exactly what to expect from each and every hunt.

Capcom is aware of this, which is why DLC for their Monster Hunter games is so important. They bring in even more new creatures to learn, grind, and just marvel at. Sunbreak for Monster Hunter Rise is one of the most extensive DLCs the series has seen yet and is well worth picking up your weapons once again to explore the new environments and see what dangerous predators await you. If you want to get a sneak peek at all the new monsters laying in wait in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, here's a full list with some basic tips to help your first hunt be a success.

Everything announced at the June 2022 Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase
Mario, Rabbid Peach, and more characters pose in Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope key art.

Lagging behind a strong State of Play from Sony and an excellent Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase from Microsoft, Nintendo has now held a presentation of its own. It's not a full-blown Nintendo Direct, though. Instead, this June 28 presentation is a Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase, the first of its kind since 2020. As the showcase's name suggests, this is shorter than a typical Nintendo Direct and mainly focused on what third-party developers and publishers are bringing to Nintendo Switch in the coming months.
As Nintendo has said that this presentation would contain "roughly 25 minutes of info on upcoming third-party #NintendoSwitch games" on Twitter, don't expect the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 or Metroid Prime 4 to show up here. Still, there are plenty of cool games like Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope that make an appearance here, and we have a clearer idea of what the biggest third-party Nintendo Switch games of 2022 are. We kept track of everything announced during the Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase, so you can look below and see everything Nintendo and its partners revealed throughout the event.

Nier Automata is coming to Nintendo Switch

In one of the most notable announcements of this Partner Showcase, we learned that the critically acclaimed Nier Automata is finally coming to Nintendo Switch. It's one of PlatinumGames' best titles and has an amazing story, so be sure to check this out on Switch if you haven't already. It's also a native port, and not a cloud version either. Nier Automata: The End of YoRHa Edition launches on October 6.

Return to Monkey Island | Gameplay Reveal Trailer
After it was confirmed earlier this year, we finally got a deeper look at Return to Monkey Island's story and gameplay. It's got a distinct and pretty new art style and looks faithful to how the old Monkey Island games play, so hopefully, it lives up to series fans' lofty expectations. It will be released in 2022.
