Marvel Snap is Hearthstone for superheroes

Just when you thought the multiverse couldn’t get any larger, Marvel is extending into the world of digital card games. The company announced its new mobile game venture, Marvel Snap, a collectible card game coming to mobile and PC by former Hearthstone developers.

MARVEL SNAP | Official Announcement & Gameplay First Look

As shown in its reveal trailer, Marvel Snap takes the many universes of Marvel and brings them together for Yu-Gi-Oh-style card battles. The game’s chief production officer, Yong Woo, describes the game as, “a card game that strips away everything that gets in the way of fun and gets everybody straight into the strategic action.”

It’s clear that the game is chasing the mainstream audience that Marvel Studios captured with the Marvel Cinematic Universe by making Marvel Snap as open as possible while retaining the hallmarks of the card battler genre. This is partly accomplished by making the game faster than other collectible card games on the market.

Both players take their turns at the same time, removing all waiting from the experience. This allows both players to make their decisions simultaneously and results in a game where matches take half the time of a standard card game.

The card game also supports online play with standard ranked and player-matched modes. The game will feature voice acting, as well as tons of art from decades of Marvel Comics. For Marvel fans, it’s looking like a fun celebration of the comic company’s long superhero history.

Marvel Snap has no set release date just yet, but fans can sign up for its beta on the official website.

PC classic Bloons works surprisingly well as a strategy card game
Two monkeys battle in Bloons Card Storm.

If you spent any time on a computer in the late 2000s, there's a good chance you recognize the name Bloons. The colorful series a gaming staple of the era, with five games and multiple updates to each released between 2007 and 2009. It began as a browser-based puzzle game about popping balloons, but quickly evolved into a surprisingly robust tower defense game that's still going strong.

The series is about to change once again thanks to Bloons Card Storm. This time, developer Ninja Kiwi is reimagining its iconic game as a deck-building strategy game. That's a surprising shift on paper, but it's one that actually fits in practice. I gave the upcoming card game a spin, trying out a few of its early levels. While it took me some time to get used to it, I can already see the markings of a mobile hit here.

GAMESCOM Opening Night Live 2024 ONL: Official Livestream (Tuesday, August 20, 11a PT/2p ET/8p CEST)

While June may be the busiest month for video game showcases, the summer doesn't truly end until Gamescom Opening Night Live. The annual live stream, which kicks off the Gamescom convention in Germany, has become the biggest gaming show outside of Summer Game Fest. That's no coincidence considering that Geoff Keighley hosts both. This year's Opening Night Live was a major one, with over 60 reveals across the two-hour show (and a half hour pre-show beforehand).
