Online Pass to become a regular feature of first-party games, says Sony

Last weekend, it was confirmed that Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception will be the second title (after Resistance 3) to make use of Sony’s Online Pass to enable the game’s multiplayer mode. Now it looks like the single-use code will become a regular feature of Sony’s upcoming games.

“Online Pass will be incorporated into Uncharted 3 and future Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios games with online functionality,” the company told Destructoid. “We will provide further information in the future.”

Online Pass requires users to submit a code in order to unlock the multiplayer mode for games, and was created in order to generate revenue from the used-game marketplace. Anyone purchasing a used copy of Uncharted 3 or Resistance 3 will be required to purchase one of the codes in order to access the games’ multiplayer modes.

The system has had its share of critics, but the statement from Sony seems to indicate that Online Pass is here to stay.

Xbox Game Pass adds Madden 22, but loses Titanfall
The Green Bay Packers vs the Minnesota Vikings in Madden NFL 22.

Microsoft revealed on Xbox Wire the Xbox Game Pass titles we can expect in the back half of February. While Total War: Warhammer 3 and Madden NFL 22 are coming to the service, it's an otherwise quiet lineup preceding the removal of some good indie games and the original Titanfall.
Total War: Warhammer III is the latest game in Sega's real-time strategy game series based on the popular board game. The game sits at a score of 87 on review aggregate site Metacritic and is a day one Game Pass title --  but it's only available on the PC version of the service.

The next most notable title is Madden NFL 22. EA's annual football franchise is one of the most popular series in gaming. It will be available through EA Play (an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate bonus) on console and PC.
Outside of that, Xbox Game Pass subscribers can expect a couple of simulation games on console, as well as Alice: Madness Returns on PC and the Mass Effect Legendary Edition on the cloud. Here's the full list of titles joining Xbox Game Pass during the remainder of February:

Sony reportedly has a Game Pass competitor in development
PlayStation 5 side view

Sony is ratcheting up its competition with Microsoft's Xbox ecosystem in the form of a competitor to Xbox Game Pass, according to a report from Bloomberg.  The report, which cites "people familiar with Sony's plans and documents viewed by Bloomberg," alleges that the competitor, code-named Spartacus, will be a tiered subscription plan.

Expected to launch in spring 2022, Spartacus will combine PlayStation's two current subscription services, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, into one service. PlayStation Now has been seen as a failed competitor to Game Pass that lets players stream a limited number of games to their PlayStation consoles. According to the report, PlayStation Now will be phased out entirely, while the PlayStation Plus branding is retained.

Sony doesn’t need an Xbox Game Pass killer — it already has one
PS4 (Playstation 4) using PS Now.

PlayStation Now was the first major step in game streaming services. Yes, we had plenty of other attempts with services like OnLive (which I also tried back in 2010), but none ever had the weight of a massive corporation behind it. Sony acquired the service formerly known as Gaikai in 2012 and transformed it into its very own exclusive streaming service that it's been working on to this day.

The thing is, after that initial purchase push, Sony has been pretty silent about PS Now. It's quietly gained 3.2 million subscribers as of March 2021, which isn't all that much when you compare it to the number of PS+ subscribers but is still a substantial number.
