The first RTX 4070 Ti preorders confirm our worst fears

Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 Ti is rumored to be coming out soon, and some retailers across the globe have jumped the gun and started putting it up for sale ahead of time. This time, the GPU was spotted at a Chinese retailer in two custom versions.

These early listings provide us with the first hints as to the pricing of the RTX 4070 Ti. Unfortunately, they only serve to confirm what we’ve already feared — the GPU might be just as expensive as the RTX 4090 and the RTX 4080.

Leaked images of the RTX 4070 Ti appeared on Baidu, a Chinese website, and were later shared by Wccftech. The photos show us two custom versions of the card, both made by MSI: the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Gaming X and the RTX 4070 Ti Ventus 3X.

Each has a slightly different price tag, but both of those price tags are not great. The Ventus 3X is priced at 7,199 RMB, which translates to around $1,034, while the Gaming X costs 7,599 RMB ($1,092). This puts these cards just slightly south of the recommended price for the RTX 4080, which is, of course, quite ridiculous. However, it’s important to note that these prices are likely different from what Nvidia will set as the MSRP for the RTX 4070 Ti.

For one, we’re dealing with two custom versions of the card, and MSI is known for making some of the more high-end models. They’ll have slightly better specs than the Founders Edition, but they’ll also cost more. Another thing to consider is that there are added taxes, so this might be the price on the Chinese market, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the U.S. market will receive the same treatment.

In all likelihood, it will be cheaper in the United States than it seems to be in China. On the other hand, seeing an almost $1,100 list price in China suggests that it still won’t exactly be cheap. The RTX 4090 and the RTX 4080 are both expensive, and so far, all signs point to Nvidia continuing that trend. A price in the ballpark of $800 to $900 seems quite likely.

Rumors say that the RTX 4070 Ti will be equipped with the full AD104-400 GPU featuring 7,680 CUDA cores. Other specs include a clock speed of 2,610MHz (likely higher for custom versions), 48MB of L2 cache, and up to 12GB of GDDR6X memory across a 192-bit bus. The memory is supposed to be running at 21Gbps, meaning a bandwidth of 504GB/s.

The RTX 4070 Ti keeps the power requirements fairly mild. With a TBP of 285 watts, it’s set to consume less power than both the RTX 3080 10GB and the RTX 3070 Ti, albeit very slightly — 35 watts for the 3080 and 5 watts for the 3070 Ti.

Performance-wise, the RTX 4070 Ti is said to be trailing far behind the RTX 4080, which is why it’s important that it’s not too expensive. If it’s priced correctly, it could still become one of the best graphics cards for more balanced builds. Nvidia might shed more light on the matter during CES 2023.

RTX 4090.

Nvidia's upcoming top GPU is taking its sweet time to make it to the market, and by the sound of it, we won't see it anytime soon. According to a new report from Benchlife, as well as various other sources, Nvidia is planning to unveil the RTX 50-series at CES 2025 in January. This means that the RTX 5090 is unlikely to make an appearance any sooner than three to four months from now. On the upside, we just learned even more about what the card's going to offer.

After a few months of managing expectations, many GPU enthusiasts no longer expect the RTX 50-series to be released this year -- and leakers agree. Following the huge specification leak we got yesterday, at least two new publications (both Benchlife and The Verge) are now claiming that Nvidia won't announce its next-gen GPUs until 2025. Reputable hardware leakers like kopite7kimi have also previously said that early 2025 is the current target.

The RTX 5090 will reportedly require 600 watts of power
The back of the Nvidia RTX 4080 Super graphics card.

Rumors have been circulating about the RTX 5090 for a while, but we're finally getting a clearer picture of how Nvidia's flagship RTX 50-series GPU is shaping up. Well-known hardware leaker Kopite7kimi is claiming the RTX 5090, which seems destined to earn a spot among the best graphics cards, will come with an obscene power requirement of 600 watts.

The leaker shared specs for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 on X (formerly Twitter). We've seen vague claims from Kopite7kimi in the past concerning RTX 50-series graphics cards, but this is the first time the leaker has shared full specs. According to the leak, the RTX 5090 will require 600W of power and come with a staggering 32GB of GDDR7 memory across a 512-bit bus.

Nvidia is reportedly sunsetting the RTX 4090

The RTX 4090 is undoubtedly the best graphics card you can buy right now from a performance standpoint, but Nvidia is reportedly discontinuing the flagship GPU. Reports from the Board Channel forums (shared by Wccftech) suggest Nvidia is preparing to end production of the RTX 4090 and the China-exclusive RTX 4090D starting next month in order to make way for next-gen RTX 50-series graphics cards.

It's not surprising that Nvidia would wind down production of the RTX 4090 as the next generation of graphics cards approaches. Flagship GPUs like the RTX 4090 don't have much of a shelf life after a new generation has released, which is something we saw in action with the RTX 3090. Although Nvidia could end production of the GPU in October (the company itself hasn't, and likely won't, confirm that detail publicly), the card won't immediately disappear from store shelves.
