OnePlus’ first mechanical keyboard looks like the one to beat in 2023

OnePlus is debuting something a bit different with its mechanical keyboard developed in partnership with Keychron, which makes some of the best keyboards on the market.

The OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro features unique Marble-mallow keycaps, which have a focus on comfort, functionality, and durability while still allowing for high performance and premium style. Its keycaps are derived from a thermoplastic material, which allows them to have a soft bounce on the hands, the brand said.

OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro is the first commercial product out of the OnePlus Featuring fan-company initiative.

The OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro features a CNC aluminum chassis with a matte finish. Design signatures on the keyboard include its alert slider, which is inspired by OnePlus smartphones; the Escape key, which was done in OnePlus red; and the rotary knob, which can be used in a traditional function or customized to your preference.

The keyboard is the brand’s first commercial product to release internationally from its initiative OnePlus Featuring, which allows fans and enthusiasts to invest and participate in the development and release of new OnePlus products. So far, the first OnePlus keyboard has almost 4,000 backers, and there is a continuing opportunity to become an investor in the program.

The unique and adaptable switches on the OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro are a primary feature that came out of this brand-community collaboration. The keyboard includes a double gasket, which helps minimize sound and maximize comfort for users, similar to the recently released Asus ROG Azoth. OnePlus also worked with the keyboard brand Keychron to ensure that the keyboard can be mapped well across several operating systems, including MacOS, Windows, Linux, and Android OS.

The OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro is also compatible with various customizable and open-source firmware such as QMK and VIA. There is also a built-in hot swap feature that allows you to easily change key functions to your preference.

I’m typing this out on the new Azio Izo Wireless Mechanical Keyboard, a Bluetooth mechanical keyboard that looks like it belongs in places other than an office thanks to its introduction of some much-needed flair to the humble keyboard. Apple’s Magic Keyboard is superb but it’s also very expensive, and if you want to enjoy typing on the iPad but not to spend $300 or more doing so, a good Bluetooth mechanical keyboard is a great alternative.

How much cheaper than a Magic Keyboard? The Azio Izo keyboard is $70, or $146 if you choose the whole kit, which includes a mouse and a number pad, all in a matching color scheme, to go along with it. I’ve been typing away with the keyboard for about a week, connected to either my iPad Pro (2020) using Bluetooth or my Mac Mini M1 with a USB cable.

If you're a fan of nostalgia and have a Nintendo GameCube console laying around, you will want to check out the keyboard controller that's been modified into a mechanical keyboard by Redditer Holychipmunk. Nintendo originally sold a keyboard that was sandwiched between gaming controllers for the console -- think the Nintendo Switch, but with a mechanical keyboard where the built-in screen is. Unfortunately, that contraption was too big and unwieldy.

The modified hack looks a lot more chic and elegant, complete with controller buttons and keys that are decked out in a Vilebloom color theme that goes from a light shade of pastel peach to pink to a rich, dark teal hue. Even the controller buttons have been swapped out to match the Vilebloom colorway on the keyboard's keys for a completely cohesive look.

Finding a good mechanical keyboard can be a complicated affair. The search is made worse if you are a Mac user and want one that plays nice with your device, as the mech market is heavily tilted toward Windows users. The Keychron K8, however, might be just what you are looking for.

That is because it is a rare breed: A mechanical keyboard that comes with a Mac layout. By default, all the keycaps are ready-made for Mac use (there are Windows keycaps in the box if you want to switch). There are even dedicated Siri/Cortana and screenshot buttons (great on a Mac). Throw in a very reasonable starting price of $69 (most quality mechanical keyboards are $100-plus) and we are off to a good start.
