Nicolas Cage embraces chaos in Sympathy for the Devil trailer

As an actor, Nicolas Cage has had a wildly eclectic career that ranges from would-be Superman to an occasional vampire in Renfield. For his next movie, Sympathy for the Devil, Cage is playing to his strengths as an enigmatic passenger who holds Joel Kinnamen’s driver at gunpoint. In the trailer below, Cage is completely convincing as an off-the-wall and violent hit man who could kill the driver at any time. However, it also appears that the passenger did not hijack the driver at random. Instead, he seems to have a purpose in mind.

SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL Official Trailer

The trailer does go out of its way to present the driver as an unassuming family man. When the passenger gets in his car, the driver is attempting to get to the hospital before his wife gives birth. Unfortunately for the happy couple, the passenger has other plans. And when the driver attempts to get help or escape, the people around him die at the hands of the passenger.

The only real hint we have about the passenger’s motivation is that the driver is attempting to convince him that he isn’t the person that the passenger thinks he is. But if this was a mere case of mistaken identity, then how would the driver know why he was targeted? More importantly, the driver needs to figure out how he can get out of this situation without losing everything he has.

Until recently, Warner Bros. has been known to be the best studio In Hollywood at marketing its films. Remember that awesome campaign for 2016's Suicide Squad? I do, and I fully believe it was the marketing, and not the actual terrible movie itself, that caused Suicide Squad to gross over $700 million worldwide. (Yes, it really made that much money!)

Lately, however, the studio's marketing has come across as a little desperate. Last year's Black Adam had a secret Henry Cavill Superman cameo that The Rock "accidentally" revealed just before the movie launched. WB doubled down with their next DC film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, by spoiling that movie's post-credits Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman cameo by including it on a nationally televised commercial two weeks before its release. Never mind that her cameo was actually a pivotal plot point in the Shazam! sequel; WB needed to put butts in theatres, no matter what the cost. That film's director, David F. Sandberg, wasn't too pleased, and the movie tanked anyway.

Dracula’s servant wants a normal life in Renfield trailer
A scene from Renfield with Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult in Renfield

R. M. Renfield (The Great's Nicholas Hoult) wants to live a normal life without his boss breathing down his neck. Practically every person in the workforce strives for that same goal. However, not everyone works for the narcissistic vampire known as Dracula (Pig's Nicolas Cage). Renfield's attempt to break free from the Count is the subject of Universal's upcoming horror comedy Renfield, which released its final trailer today.

After 90 years as a servant to Dracula, Renfield wants to change his life. Renfield no longer wants to obtain bodies for his master to eat or dry clean his cape. After saving a bar from a shooting and meeting traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (The Farewell's Awkwafina), Renfield is inspired to sever his ties with his boss. However, the needy Dracula won't let his servant out of his grasp without a fight, so Renfield and Rebecca team up to end the vampire's reign.

Nicolas Cage’s Dracula wants his servant back in Renfield trailer
Nicolas Cage smiles as Dracula in Renfield.

Is there a better feat of casting than Nicolas Cage (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) as Dracula? The animated and over-the-top actor perfectly channels the world's most famous vampire in the first trailer for Renfield.

Nicholas Hoult (The Menu) plays the titular Renfield, Dracula's henchman and servant. When he falls for a traffic cop from New Orleans named Rebecca Quincy (The Farewell's Awkwafina), Renfield finds a new lease on life and wants out of his working relationship with Dracula. Renfield is tired of working for his demanding boss after centuries of providing Dracula with fresh bodies to feast on. As Quincy puts it, Renfield is the "guy that gets the villain’s Postmates."
