Disney+ reveals the first trailer for Star Wars: Tales of the Empire

In 2022, Disney+ and Lucasfilm unveiled Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, a six-part series of animated shorts. A second season was announced soon after, and it’s now just a month away. However, the show has undergone a name change to Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, and it’s about to dive into even darker territory. Disney+ has dropped the first trailer for Tales of the Empire, and it chronicles the story of two women who embrace the Dark Side of the Force.

One of the main characters of Tales of the Empire is Barriss Offee, with Meredith Salenger reprising the role from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Barriss was once a member of the Jedi Order and the best friend of Ahsoka Tano. However, she betrayed the Jedi and Ahsoka when she framed her friend for a terrorist act as a protest against the Republic’s ongoing war. The trailer reveals that Barriss not only survived the Jedi purge that occurred in Revenge of the Sith, but she was recruited to join the Empire’s Jedi-hunting Inquisitors.

The other main character in Tales of the Empire is Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto), who previously appeared in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. This series will explore Morgan’s origin story and establish why she joined the Empire under the command of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen).

This season’s voice cast will also include Rya Kihlstedt as Lyn, aka the Fourth Sister, Wing T. Chao as Wing, Jason Isaacs as the Grand Inquisitor, and Matthew Wood as General Grievous.

With the first season out of the way, The Acolyte has plenty of juicy threads to pick up on in a possible second season. After the failure of The Acolyte, it’s time for Star Wars to return to the big screen

It's been five years since Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker was released. In that time, Lucasfilm has rolled out The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and the second and third seasons of The Mandalorian. The studio's TV offerings have — with a few exceptions — been middling at best, but its film efforts have been nonexistent. The Rise of Skywalker, which was met with overwhelmingly negative reactions from both fans and critics alike, remains the most recent Star Wars film.

Following the release of The Rise of Skywalker, it made sense for Lucasfilm to take some time to reset and rethink its feature film plans. A break didn't seem like a bad idea, frankly. Five years and multiple mediocre TV shows later, though, it's impossible to ignore the absence of any new, truly cinematic Star Wars adventures. The franchise, which once inspired wonder and sparked the imaginations of millions of viewers, has begun to feel disappointingly one-note. The visual splendor of the Star Wars universe is in danger of being forgotten.

Last night, Lucasfilm's The Acolyte wrapped up its eight-episode debut season. The series, created by Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland, went out with an action-packed episode that brought many of its storylines to a close and simultaneously set the stage for a bigger and potentially darker next chapter. The finale wasn't The Acolyte's worst episode to date, nor was it the show's best. Instead, it's a mixed bag — much like the series itself — of impactful-on-paper moments and twists that don't all land with the weight that Headland and company clearly intended.
