How to join the Concord beta

PlayStation

PlayStation’s first real shot at cracking into the live-service world will be the competitive shooter Concord. The game features a cast of (literally) colorful characters, and the gameplay shown off so far appears to take a lot of inspiration from the hero shooter genre. Nailing that balance of such distinct characters, weapons, and abilities is tough, plus Concord isn’t going the free-to-play route like many other live-service games. Thankfully, we are getting the chance to test out the game before putting our money down. If you and your friends want to feel this game out before launch, here’s how you can get beta access.

How to join the Concord beta

There are technically two ways to get into the Concord beta. The first is to preorder either version of the game from PlayStation. Either one will let you join the beta when it starts in July. Not only that, but you will also get three more beta codes to share with your friends.

If you don’t want to put money down on a preorder, there is technically another way to get access. Since every individual who preorders gets three codes to share, all you need to do is convince a friend to preorder the game and share a code with you.

You do also get a few nice preorder bonuses. Concord launches on August 23, 2024.

Why wasn't it free-to-play? Should Sony have offered it for free through PS Plus? Did a PlayStation login requirement kill it? Would it have somehow sold millions more copies if its characters didn't have pronouns?

For the past week, gaming watercoolers have been abuzz with questions like this -- ranging from the thoughtful to the nonsensical -- regarding Sony's latest release, Concord. The live-service shooter, which launched simultaneously on both PS5 and PC, has had an uncharacteristically rocky launch for a big-budget Sony game. While PS5 stats aren't available, it's struggling to find players on Steam. At its peak on launch day, Concord only had 697 concurrent players according to SteamDB. At the time of writing, around 5 p.m. ET on a Wednesday, it only has 171 players. By comparison, Ubisoft's heavily criticized Skull and Bones has over 1,600 currently playing on Steam.

Sony's live-service hero shooter Concord launched on PC and PlayStation 5 last week, and the early numbers are looking grim.

According to third-party data site SteamDB, Concord peaked at a disappointing 697 concurrent players on PC on launch day. At the time of this writing, there are 252 players in the game. This is despite two beta periods, an early access period that began on August 20, and a public launch on August 23. In comparison, Helldivers 2, another PlayStation first-party, live-service game released simultaneously on PC and PlayStation 5, hit a concurrent players peak of 458,709 around launch. Six months in, it still rakes in tens of thousands of players.

Concord is committing to at least three seasons after its launch next week
Two characters face off in Concord.

Concord is releasing next week, so it was about time we got its post-launch road map. Publisher PlayStation revealed plans for the game's first season on Tuesday in a blog post. Among other things, it said that developer Firewalk Studios is committed to around three seasons.

Concord Season 1: Tempest will debut in October with a new playable Freegunner you can add to your roster (16 will be available at launch, along with eight variants that add modifiers to a character), along with a new map, new variants, and more cosmetics. Concord has been marketed as a live-service first-person team shooter with a narrative that's revealed as you play, so there will be new story cinematics to watch, too.
