This odd phone is for anyone who hates the Galaxy S24 Ultra

A new phone has hit crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, and it may be the one for you if you don’t want a big-screen device anymore. It’s the Unihertz Jelly Max, and it has a 5.05-inch screen, making it positively small next to phones like the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. However, where the Jelly Max keeps the screen small, one of its other dimensions is far from diminutive.

Unihertz is a well-established phone maker better known for its rugged phones and unusual phones like the Titan, which has a physical keyboard below the screen. The Jelly Max is the latest in Unihertz’s Jelly range of small phones, and its claim to fame is that it has 5G connectivity, making it one of the smallest phones available with the feature. However, just because the screen is small, doesn’t mean the rest of the phone is similarly tiny.

The Jelly Max is bizarrely thick at 16.3mm, which is at odds with its genuinely mini 128mm height and hand-friendly 62mm width. The design is simple, and its rounded body makes it look a bit like an original Motorola Moto G, just much, much thicker. We like the transparent casing though. Oddly, it’s not the battery that adds to the Jelly Max’s size, as it’s a fairly normal 4,000mAh cell. Instead, it’s likely a combination of this and a fairly impressive camera inside a small-by-modern-standards frame.

The 100-megapixel main camera probably takes up a bit of room inside the small phone, plus it’s also joined by an 8MP telephoto camera that apparently hasa 3.4x optical zoom feature. On the front is a 32MP selfie camera. The rest of the specifications include a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 processor, 12GB of RAM, 256GB of storage space, a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone, and 66-watt fast charging. The software is Android 14, there’s NFC for mobile payments, and the phone has global 5G band support.

Unihertz has certainly made a phone that’s different from most other devices sold by better-known brands today, and if you don’t mind the substantial girth that comes with the small screen, it won’t cost much to give it a try. At the time of writing, the cheapest Kickstarter deal for the Jelly Max is $259. It’s expected to ship in October this year if you decide to back it, and the project has already passed its funding goal. However, remember that Kickstarter campaigns can run into delays and are subject to other alterations. And although Unihertz has run several campaigns before this, you should be aware changes are possible between now and the time the phone arrives.

I have a love-hate relationship with the iPhone 16 Pro Max
iPhone 16 Pro Max in Desert Titanium.

Apple just launched the iPhone 16 line, and it’s been quite an upgrade this year. Though the base models got some nice updates, like the A18 chip and some of the best colors I’ve seen from Apple in years, I’m still all about the Pro models. Once you go with 1TB storage and 120Hz ProMotion displays, it’s hard to go back.

This year, things are a little different. Ever since Apple introduced a Pro model, I’ve always gone for the smaller variant. After one year with a Plus model phone, I learned that I simply don’t care for large phones, so I never tried out a Pro Max. I’ve always just gawked at how humongous the size is, and this year, Apple went ahead and made it even bigger with a 6.9-inch display instead of 6.7 inches.

The Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra brings AI to a big tablet

At an event in New York City today, Samsung unveiled its new affordable phone — the Galaxy S24 FE — and its latest tablet lineup. The first flagship products powered by a MediaTek processor in the U.S., the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra and Galaxy Tab S10 Plus bring the best of Galaxy AI to the tablet lineup.

Both tablets build on last year’s Tab S9 series, but the smaller 11-inch form factor is dropped in favor of the 12.4-inch Tab S10 Plus and the 14.6-inch Tab S10 Ultra. They’re thin at just 5.6mm and 5.4mm, and fairly light at 571 grams and 718 grams, respectively. The Galaxy Tab S10 series are two of the thinnest Android tablets you can buy, and the armor aluminum build helps them feel well-built and premium.

I used the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE. Here’s what you should know about this $650 smartphone
Someone holding the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, showing the back of the phone.

There's a new Samsung phone to talk about! It's not an industry-leading flagship, and it's not a foldable. It's the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE, and it's Samsung's latest attempt at a "value flagship" smartphone. Think of it like the Galaxy S24 Plus, but with a few spec downgrades and a $650 price tag.

I recently had the chance to go hands-on with Samsung's newest phone, and if I'm being honest, I'm not entirely sure what to think about it. Let me explain why.
The Galaxy S24 FE is a very, very big phone
