While some streamers rely on low-budget action movies, Hulu bucks that trend with its impressive lineup of films. Hulu isn’t even limited to the 20th Century Studios film library, as other studios lend out their movies to the streamer for a limited time. That means Hulu can often get some of the best action movies in Hollywood, if only briefly.

This month’s picks for the three action movies on Hulu that you need to watch include a star-studded pairing of action stars, an intense sci-fi legacy sequel, and the low-budget action/horror film that is a lot more entertaining than the movie based on the video game that it ripped off.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017)

The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017) Official F*cking Trailer – Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson teamed up in 2017 for the action comedy The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Reynolds plays Michael Bryce, a bodyguard for the rich and powerful who was at the top of his game until an assassin, Darius Kincaid (Jackson), murdered the man under his protection. Years later, Michael can barely get work in his chosen field and his reputation is trashed.

Michael’s chance for redemption comes when his ex-girlfriend, Amelia Roussel (Élodie Yung), asks him to protect Darius so he can live long enough to testify against a terrorist dictator, Vladislav Dukhovich (Slow Horses star Gary Oldman). But Darius has his own agenda, and it involves getting his wife, Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek), out of prison any way that he can.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Caesar leading his army of apes in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
20th Century Studios

The second film in the Planet of the Apes reboot series, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, is the last gasp for peace between apes and humans. Caesar (Andy Serkis) doesn’t have a lot of love left for humanity, but he comes to genuinely care for a man named Malcolm (Jason Clarke), as well as Malcolm’s wife and son, Ellie (The Diplomat‘s Keri Russell) and Alexander (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

Unfortunately for Caesar, one of his lieutenants, Koba (Toby Kebbell), hates humans so much that he’s willing to kill Caesar just to ignite a war between the apes and what’s left of humanity. And even if Caesar can win back his tribe from Koba, the damage may already be done.

Willy’s Wonderland (2021)

Willy's Wonderland - Official Trailer

There may be an official Five Nights At Freddy’s movie now, but Willy’s Wonderland has the one thing that film could never have: Nicolas Cage. The movie doesn’t even have to give Cage’s character a name. He’s just a drifter who is recruited to be the janitor for Willy’s Wonderland, an abandoned family entertainment center that is haunted by murderous animatronics.

The janitor has to unleash a little mayhem of his own to survive these killer robots. Meanwhile, the sheriff’s daughter, Liv Hawthorne (Emily Tosta), attempts to burn down the cursed site until she realizes that the janitor is stuck inside. Liv even enters the entertainment center herself to save him. But getting in was the easy part. Getting out will be much harder.

3 underrated shows on Hulu you need to watch in October 2024
A teacher stands in front of the class buttoning his blazer in English Teacher.

The fall TV schedule has largely arrived, and there will be a few series from ABC and Fox that may rank among the underrated shows on Hulu. But for October, our choices include an FX comedy that premiered earlier this year to a lot less attention than The Bear gets. That's the harsh lesson for TV lovers: Not every show is going to be a hit out of the gate.

Our other picks this month include a Western series that has some modern flair, as well as one of the all-time great TV comedy/dramas that had fallen into obscurity before this year.

3 PBS shows you should watch in October 2024
The cast of Velvet.

While October is a very busy month for PBS, we can understand if you want to get away from the wall-to-wall coverage of the 2024 U.S. Presidential election. PBS has a first-class news organization, but dealing with all of that drama can be exhausting. Sometimes, we just want to get our dose of British dramas from PBS and just let the rest sit for a while. In October, there's only one new British show on the way, and it will be joined by a Spanish drama as well.

Our other pick from the three great PBS shows you should watch in October is an episode of Great Performances that will bring a powerful operatic musical right to your home. But if you want to see all of your options, you can always check the other new shows on PBS in October. You can even go back and revisit the great PBS shows to watch in September as well. But for the month of October, these are our recommendations.

If you have to watch one (HBO) Max movie in October 2024, stream this one
An old man talks on a phone in Misery.

Horror lovers will find a lot of options to enjoy on Max in October, especially if they love the work of Stephen King. The long-delayed reboot of King's Salem's Lot arrived on Max earlier this month alongside previous adaptations like Doctor Sleep, The Shining, the original Salem's Lot, and both the TV and film versions of It. But if you're looking for an understated tale of terror from the master of horror, then the one (HBO) Max movie that you have to watch in October is Misery.

King wrote the original novel in 1987 as a parable for his addiction to drugs and perhaps for his aversion from his most devoted fans. Rob Reiner directed the film from legendary screenwriter William Goldman, who previously collaborated with the director on The Princess Bride. It's the story of a novelist, Paul Sheldon (James Caan), whose life is saved by his "biggest fan," Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), before she makes his existence a living hell by holding him captive and forcing him to write for her. Screen icon Lauren Bacall has a small role as Paul's agent, Marcia Sindell, and there are a handful of other actors as well. Yet for the most part, Bates and Caan carry this movie by themselves.
