How to make Twitter lists

How to make Twitter listsIts no secret that Twitter is a great way to stay updated on things that interest you, but with so many good people to follow on the site, your feed can quickly become a confusing and difficult to navigate mess. If you follow more than 100 people, your master feed can easily get thousands of tweets a day, which makes it much more difficult to keep track of your interests. In order to get the most out of the site, it’s best to organize the people you follow into lists.

A list is just what it sounds like – it’s a curated group of Twitter users that you create. Viewing a list timeline will show you only tweets from the users that you’ve added to that particular list, so it’s a great way to categorize your interests. Here’s a quick guide on how to use Twitter lists, along with some useful tips to help save you time and frustration.

Creating a list

  1. Open up your Twitter homepage and click the gear icon in the top right corner
  2. Click Create List
  3. Give your list a name, and if you’d like, provide a short description
  4. Designate the list as public (viewable to anyone) or private (viewable only to you)
  5. Click Save List

Adding people to lists

  1. Head to the profile of any person you’d like to add to your list and click the gear icon on their page.
  2. A pop-up will appear displaying your lists. Use the checkboxes to add the user to any or all of the lists you like.
  3. There’s no “add to list” button, so just click away from the pop-up after you’ve checked the box and the user is added. To check that it worked, head to your lists page (gear menu again), click the desired list, and then click Members. It everything worked correctly, the person should appear in the list of members.
*Tip: Unfortunately, there’s no simple way to add lots of people to a list at once through Twitter. Instead, the site forces you to do it one by one, user by user. However, you can skip this tedious process and quickly organize everyone you follow into groups by using a handy little app called Twitlistmanager. Just sign in with your Twitter credentials to start using it.

Following/Subscribing to lists made by other people

  1. Click on Lists when viewing someone’s profile.
  2. Select which list you’d like to subscribe to.
  3. From the list page, click Subscribe to follow the list. You can follow lists without following the individual users in that list.

Editing or deleting lists:

  1. Go to your profile page
  2. Click on the Lists tab
  3. You’ll see lists you’ve created and other people’s lists you follow under Subscribed to.
  4. Select which list you’d like to edit or delete from the lists you’ve created. Click Edit to update your list details or click Delete to remove the list entirely.
  5. You cannot add or remove people from your list on this page — you must do that from the profile pages of each individual you wish to add or remove.

List limitations

In order to reduce downtime and error pages, Twitter has placed some limits on the Lists feature.

  • 20 lists permitted per user
  • 500 users permitted per list
  • List names cannot exceed 25 characters
  • List names cannot begin with a numerical character

How to run a free background check
A person's hands typing on a laptop placed on a black desk.

Whether it’s embarrassing Facebook photos or the complete criminal record of your sister’s new boyfriend, the internet is a treasure trove of background information. And while there are many fee-based services, it’s possible to learn quite a bit about someone from public records or through content found on online social networks.
While you could run a check on somebody else, perhaps you should scan your own background first. You’ll be able to check your credit report and insurance information for inaccuracies. You’ll also see what potential landlords, employers, or anyone else can find out about you if they decide to do a little detective work of their own.
Either way, here’s how to run a comprehensive background check without spending a dime.

Using search engines
The first place you should start is with a web search. Google can easily pull up a ton of information, assuming you know the person's name or any relevant information pertaining to him or her. The results can function as a starting point from which to branch out.

With or without Elon Musk at the helm, Twitter can’t seem to decide what it wants to do with its algorithmic timeline, currently branded as “for you,” which shows tweets it thinks you'll like, whether or not you follow the tweeter.

For years it’s been messing about not only with the algorithm but also with the extent to which it forces the timeline on users.
