FCC filing indicates Roku 3 may be on its way

Roku-4200X-Mini-Media-Player-Passes-through-FCC-2With the exception of its Streaming StickRoku has not updated its media streamers since 2011, but it looks like we’re about to see at least one new model based on documentation filed with the FCC. The new model, which is currently being referred to as the 4200x (Roku 3, anyone?) is smaller than the Roku 2 XS with a tiny 2.25 x 2.25-inch footprint, and seems to support both 2 and 5 GHz WiFi bands. Roku is being rather tight lipped about the technical details, but expect to see an HDMI output, Ethernet and USB ports, and even more channels of content. The new model will offer 1080p playback and a Bluetooth gaming remote, unless something changes on that end.

Roku now offers more than 700 channels through its media steamers, but an official YouTube channel is still missing. Users have been waiting a long time for one and, we’re holding out hope that the time has finally come.

If Roku wanted to make its dedicated base really happy, it would upgrade the Ethernet port to a gigabit connection, and launch its own media server channel so that those of us with movies on a NAS drive could stream them without having to use third-party solutions. The fight between Roku, Apple, and Boxee is getting hot again, and it’s only February.

Google and Roku strike a deal to keep YouTube and YouTube TV on the platform
YouTube on Roku.

Google and Roku today announced that the two companies have reached a deal that will keep YouTube and YouTube TV on the No. 1 streaming platform in the United States and return the YouTube TV channel to the Roku Channel Store. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but it's good for multiple years.

Roku's Dallas Lawrence, head of comms for platform business, told Digital Trends via email: "Roku and Google have agreed to a multiyear extension for both YouTube and YouTube TV.  This agreement represents a positive development for our shared customers, making both YouTube and YouTube TV available for all streamers on the Roku platform."

Roku is aware of its OS 10.5 update breaking your streaming apps
Roku OS 10.5.

If you're struggling to stream video after the Roku OS 10.5 update, you're not alone, apparently. The leading streaming platform's user forums have been busy in the days following the major update, with all sorts of complaints of things being broken.

The complaints range from channel-specific — things like YouTube TV not working — to overall network connectivity problems to general malaise. It's not easy to troubleshoot from afar when you're dealing with multiple devices over multiple generations, but the general consensus over 20 pages of posts so far (as well as in the Roku subreddit) is that something is wrong.

Here’s what you can do if Roku loses YouTube in December
YouTube on Roku.

Come December 9, it's very possible that Roku -- the No. 1 streaming platform in the United States, and No. 2 in the rest of the world -- could lose access to YouTube due to an ongoing dispute with Google over ... something. (Roku says it's not about money, but it's totally about money.) Losing YouTube also would mean losing access to YouTube TV, because that's currently the only way to get to the No. 2 live TV streaming service on Roku due to the fallout from this whole fracas.

It's exhausting as someone who uses YouTube TV. It's exhausting as someone who uses Roku. And it raises the very real question about what your options are if, come the second week of December, YouTube and YouTube TV no longer are available on Roku.
