KFC’s UK branches to roll out free Wi-Fi, greasy smartphone screens likely

kfcWhether you’re banging away at a Boneless Banquet for One or merely fingering a Family Feast, you’ll soon be able to whip out your mobile device in a British branch of KFC and jump online for free, secure in the knowledge that by the end of your session you’ll need a moistened disposable towel to clean up the mess.

That’s the trouble with greasy food and mobile devices. In fact, that’s the trouble with greasy food period – the oil just gets everywhere, even when you’re careful.

Still, KFC evidently thinks free Wi-Fi will makes its more than 800 UK restaurants even stickier places, with happily surfing diners perhaps more inclined to place a second order once their first fried feast has crossed their lips.

Commenting on the move, Nathan James, KFC’s senior manager of brand services, said, “We are operating in a highly competitive industry and are always looking for ways to improve our restaurants.”

He continued, “As more and more of our customers are using smart devices, we know Internet connectivity is fast becoming a key part of the restaurant experience. Diners want to be able to browse, access social networks, search for retail outlets around them to plan their day, or access KFC-related information and special offers. The new Wi-Fi service offers exactly this and helps ensure we provide an enjoyable dining experience.”

Diners accessing KFC’s free Wi-Fi, which is to be provided by public broadband service The Cloud, will first be taken to a KFC page displaying menus, special offers and other goodies. Tap your way past that page and you can surf the Web to your heart’s content.

While the chicken-focused fast food outlet’s free Wi-Fi service may prove popular with diners looking to kill some time, it’s been a while coming. McDonald’s has been offering free Wi-Fi for some time now, and is also set to trial free table-based Qi wireless charging pads at select European restaurants.

Before you head to the app store on your phone to buy a voice-recording app, take a moment to consider the apps that may already be installed on your phone. Why? In my experience, they're likely all you really need. I’ve recorded interviews and voice-overs for work for years, and I’ve found the two best examples come preinstalled on your phone already, so they’re entirely free to use.

Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Tablets are a dime-a-dozen these days, with offerings from all the great brands including Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, and more. So, if you really want to stand out in a sea of similar tech, you need to do things a little differently. That's what Google's Pixel Tablet offers. How? It comes with a unique speaker dock that can be used to both charge the device and offer room-filling sound -- almost like a smart speaker add-on. Better yet, when your Pixel Tablet is docked it benefits from the Hub Mode, turning the device into a smart display, with digital photo frame support, smart home controls, and hands-free Google functionality. Of course, it could set you back at full price, normally $499 unless you find it included in a roundup of the best Google Pixel deals. Well, guess what? Thanks to a Best Buy Google Pixel Tablet deal, you can get it today for $439 and save $60. Hurry, though, it's part of Best Buy's recent 48-hour sale so it won't stick around for long.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Tablet
Okay, okay, so in our Google Pixel Tablet review, Joe Maring did give it less than stellar remarks, but he called out its reliable fingerprint sensor, comfortability during use and excellent speaker dock. Honestly, how many tablets come with a matching speaker dock that transforms the entire experience? This tablet also marks a "lot of firsts" for Google, as it's the first tablet from the company in nearly five years, the first Android tablet in eight years, and can be converted into a smart home display with the speaker dock. All of which are notable milestones.
