So you’re one of those people who think your body is God-gifted, and you’re pretty confident about your physically impressive endowments. Lean in closer, you narcissist, ’cause we’ve got a way for you to show off that hot bod with the rest of the world. Well, at least with the rest of New York City, thanks to The New Museum’s upcoming exhibit, “Sext Me If You Can.”
The performance and interactive installation by Karen Finley is the museum’s latest tech-infused exhibition. Finley is asking that participants sext her a photo of their junk, and she’ll create paintings inspired by the scandalous photos. If your picture is selected for painting, you can also buy the limited edition canvas right at the museum (alternatively, you can buy a painting of someone else’s naked portrait and pretend someone sexted that to you – or do whatever you want with it, just don’t tell us about it). Otherwise, the artwork will be on display right in the museum lobby.
“Through this process, the erotic exchange with the artist – bound by rules of commerce – transforms into a lasting and collectible work of art,” the exhibit describes. “Participation takes the form of a commission and requires a 10 minute private and anonymous sitting on-site during announced performance times.” Finley even notes that you should bring your own multimedia messaging-capable phone, in case you haven’t figured. Oh, and you must absolutely be at least 18 years old, or else she and everyone else who visits the museum will end up looking at child porn.
This isn’t the first time Finley’s creating a gallery of sext-inspired art. She’s pulled the same stunt last November in Miami, and again in California earlier this January. Looks like she’s found the secrets to what all high school teenagers have been looking for since they’ve discovered the Internet. Better start learning how to paint, boys.
