Blockbuster On Demand app launches for iPhone and iPad

blockbusterondemand

Months after Blockbuster relaunched its on-demand digital rental service, it has released apps for the iPhone and iPad in the hopes of attracting more viewers.

When “Blockbuster On Demand” saw new life back in January, apps were launched for PC, Mac, Android, Roku and Samsung’s Smart TVs. With 1080p streaming and 5.1 surround sound, parent company Dish Network hoped that it could reap some rewards from the streaming video gravy train.

Unfortunately for them, the going has been tough thus far with the service still lagging behind market leaders like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. The release of iOS apps is aimed at broadening the range of access, but also to attract some of the millions of viewers who own the iPhone or iPad. It works on all iPhones, iPads and iPod touches running IOS 4.3 or later.

The app offers rental options for single titles that users can watch instantly or save for viewing later on, which can be viewed on any of the other supported devices or platforms. Evidently, the app will also fully support HD streams and full surround sound, but it’s not clear if there will be limitations on what titles are offered with those features. Nor does it seem like anything uniquely new was added specifically for the new apps.

It’s a sign of changing times for the once-mighty Blockbuster, which had 9,000 stores in the U.S. at its peak, but may now number just under 500. Dish had posited that it might go after Netflix by launching a streaming service of comparable size and depth, but backed out because of the cost involved.

Best Buy discounts Apple HomePod and iPad Pro 12.9 for 4th of July
iPad Pro 2020 Screen

With Best Buy's 4th of July sales officially underway, now's the perfect time to score the gadget of your dreams for a lot less, like the Apple HomePod and iPad Pro 12.9 (2018), both of which are on sale right now. You'll need to act fast, though: Discounts on Apple products typically don't last long.
Apple HomePod
— $200, was $300

The HomePod continues Apple's legacy of keeping it simple yet stylish. This smart speaker is not only wonderfully minimalistic but is also built like a tank. At 5.5 pounds, it has real heft, and that’s because of robust cabinetry and huge magnets on the internal drivers, which produce out-of-this-world bass. The HomePod is very simple to set up, but here's the catch: You must have an iOS device that's capable of running iOS 11.2.5, otherwise you won't be able to use it. The most primitive Apple devices that it will work on are the iPhone 5S, iPad Mini 2, and iPod Touch sixth generation. There is also a tragic lack of a Bluetooth connection and auxiliary input jack to connect non-Apple devices. Despite the drawbacks, here's where the HomePod really aces it: Sound quality. With a large cavity that houses a 4-inch woofer and seven tweeters surrounding the speaker (each coming with its own high-powered amplifier), the HomePod is the audiophile's smart speaker. Every music genre that we played on it sounded lush and rich in details, perfectly complemented by a full-bodied bass that means business. The HomePod is made exclusive for the Apple faithful. It normally retails for $300, but right now you can get it at Best Buy for a whopping $100 off.

You can now buy or rent videos in Amazon Prime Video for iPhone and Apple TV
amazon-prime-instant-video-2019

A new shift in Apple's approach to streaming services means that it will no longer take a 30% commission within "premium subscription video" services like Amazon Prime Video, which means Amazon customers can now buy or rent videos on their iPhones or Apple TV devices.

Apple has had a longstanding policy of taking a 30% cut from all in-app purchases made on iOS devices. That policy has rubbed many developers the wrong way and caused big companies like Amazon to restrict digital purchases within its apps. In Amazon's Kindle app for iOS, for instance, people can access their existing Kindle library but there is no way to buy new titles from Amazon within the app.

Apple is holding a special ceremony for its favorite apps and games of 2019
apple holding apps and games awards on december 2 story logo gold lance ulanoff

In a surprise twist, Apple is holding a special awards ceremony in New York City on December 2, where it will honor a number of its favorite apps and games for 2019.

It's long been a tradition for early December to play host to the major app stores' celebrations of their favorite apps of the year, with both Google and Apple tending to release their lists at around the same time. However, it's the first time we've seen either of the "big two" go this far for its end-of-year awards. With apps and games playing a vital role in both Android's and iOS' ecosystems, such events make sense to help keep developers in the fold. We certainly wouldn't complain if such award ceremonies became annual events for both operating systems.
