PS4 and next Xbox will reportedly embrace free-to-play gaming

F2P gunAccording to Epic Games Vice President Mark Rein, Microsoft and Sony’s next-gen consoles, the PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox, will “embrace” free-to-play games that rely on in-app purchases for revenue

“The next-gen consoles are going to be fully embracing the free-to-play and these [in-app purchase]-type business models,” Rein said  during a roundtable discussion at the UK Game Horizon conference (via Joystiq). “So in case you don’t know that I’m putting that out there. Sony and Microsoft are both going heavily in that area.”

Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox is still under wraps, set to be revealed May 21. But Sony’s PS4 is no secret, and Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida recently told Game Informer (reported by Gaming Everything) that Sony will consider any and all revenue models that may work for the next-gen PlayStation system.

“We are developing a free-to-play type of game, but we haven’t announced it yet,” Yoshida said. “We don’t have any subscription-based games in development, but we are not crossing out any type of game; if it makes sense for a particular project, we’ll look at adopting different models. We are open for any types of models. Overall, we are increasing investment in the digital side of development, either through digital titles like Journey that we’ve been doing, but also trying to add more service-based models to our games going forward, like DLCs or additional features post launch.”

Sony also announced at the Game Developers Conference in March that Blacklight: Retribution, a free-to-play PC game, will head to PS4 at some point.

Leon parries a chainsaw villager in Resident Evil 4.

The PlayStation 4 sits comfortably atop the throne as one of the last generation's best consoles. It's the bestselling platform of the lot, with its early success being pinned mostly to its solid exclusive titles and aggressively timed DLC deals in the face of the competition. As of 2022, the PS4 has shipped more than 117 million units worldwide.

Things have evened out in recent years when it comes to exclusives, but throughout the generation, Sony's wedge of a machine has built up a healthy catalog of games across every conceivable genre. Its successor, the PlayStation 5, is backward-compatible with nearly every PS4 game, meaning you'll likely find yourself coming back to games from the previous generation on your new machine. There is a cluster of PS5 games that won't ever be coming to PS4 though.

The best video game remakes of all time
Leon parries a chainsaw villager in Resident Evil 4.

There are so many classic games from the past that have become difficult for new players to experience. The farther away in time we get from these games' releases, the more difficult it can get to not only get the game itself but also the extra hardware needed to play them. That alone is a major barrier that turns people away from playing games many consider to be some of the greatest of all time. And that's not even taking into account dated graphics, controls, and mechanics.

Remakes offer a new generation a chance to experience some of the most influential games of the past, as well as give fans of the originals a brand new way to play them all over again. The best remakes take what made a game so great before and modernize it for the current audience without losing that magical spark. It isn't an easy process, but here are the games that managed to pull it off.
