2014 BMW 6 Series M Sport Edition has plenty of tech, but not much sport

2014 BMW 6 Series Coupe M Sport EditionBMW is looking to bridge the gap between its 6 Series Coupe/Convertible and 6 Series Gran Coupe and their fiendish M6 counterparts, so it’s giving the 6 Series the M Sport Edition treatment.

Since these aren’t full M performance models, the changes are a bit more subtle and, despite having “M” and “Sport” in its name, the M Sport Edition does not get any substantial performance modifications.

On the outside, M Sport Edition models get an “M aerodynamics package” that gives them some of the flair of the M6, along with 19-inch M light alloy wheels, LED fog lamps, black brake calipers, and dark chrome exhaust tips.

The sportiest trim option on the M Sport Edition may just be the optional Sakhir Orange paint seen above. It’s a hue previously reserved for M6 models, and it makes the M Sport look pretty energetic.

On the inside, the M Sport Edition gets sport seats finished in Alcantara and leather, and a dashboard covered in Nappa leather. The entire interior is available with Opal white leather contrasting Sakhir Orange contrasting stitching.

The M Sport Edition is also loaded with tech. A head-up display is standard equipment, along with BMW’s ConnectedDrive Navigation package. The latter includes: BMW ConnectedDrive Services app integration, BMW Concierge Services, and Real Time Traffic Information. It’s all controlled through a 10.2-inch display, with voice commands and an extended hands-free phone feature.

Also standard is a Professional Hi-Fi sound system, with 16 speakers for the 6 Series Coupe and Gran Coupe, and 12 speakers for the Convertible.

Standard safety features include Park Distance Control and a rearview camera, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, and side and top-view cameras are available on 650i and 650 xi models.

Sadly, there are no mechanical modifications to report. Buyers will get the same 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged inline-six (315 horsepower) or 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 (445 hp) as in non-M Sport models.

The M Sport Edition package is available on the two-door 6 Series Coupe and Convertible or four-door 6 Series Gran Coupe.

The 6 Series M Sport Edition goes on sale in June, at about a $5,000 markup over the regular 6 Series. Prices range from a base $80,625 for a 640i Coupe M Sport Edition, to $99,225 for a 650i Convertible M Sport Edition.

Is the 6 Seres M Sport Edition worth the extra coin? Tell us in the comments.
