Grumpy Cat signs a Hollywood movie deal, still not impressed

Grumpy Cat the movie

It’s happening. If you thought Grumpy Cat, the Internet’s angriest looking feline, made it big by appearing in nearly every corner of the Web, starring in a Friskies cat food commercial campaign, and garnering a two-hour wait for a meet-and-greet at SXSW 2013, you’d be mistaken. Oh no, this kitty’s officially headed to Hollywood to star in a feature-length film that likens itself to Garfield. Yes, this is all your fault.

According to Deadline, Grumpy Cat – real name Tardar Sauce – will appear in a live-action movie in which she will reportedly earn the ability to speak. The sourpuss is teaming up with Broken Road Productions’ Todd Garner and Sean Robins to finally bring Grumpy Cat to life – and maybe explain why she’s so cranky all the time. No specific plot lines are available just yet, though given Garner’s track record of movies like 2011’s Jack and Jill and 2012’s Here Comes The Boom, we’d say you should be worried … extremely worried.

“This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy,” Garner said. “You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”

There are some things that should remain on the Internet, and some that should make infrequent public appearances. We’re not calling Grumpy Cat a sellout, but it’s gonna be very hard to continue loving this long face when she becomes too big of a fame whore. Is that even an OK thing to say about cats? I don’t know, and frankly I don’t care. Nothing matters anymore.

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino tweeted on Monday that despite the current fuss over Meta’s new and very similar Threads app, Twitter had its largest usage day last week.

Subtly including the name of Meta’s new app, which launched to great fanfare last Wednesday, Yaccarino did her best to sing Twitter’s praises, tweeting: “Don’t want to leave you hanging by a thread … but Twitter, you really outdid yourselves! Last week we had our largest usage day since February. There’s only ONE Twitter. You know it. I know it.”

The pandemic was supposed to have made us all comfortable with video calls, but many folks still don’t particularly enjoy the process.

Having to think about what to wear, or how our hair looks, or even fretting about puffy eyes following another bout of hay fever can sometimes be a bit much, even more so if it’s an early-morning call and your brain is still in bed.
