Tesla sales expected to double number of electric vehicles on the road in Hong Kong

Tesla Model SIf there was still any doubt that the Tesla Model S is on roll then news of sales projections for the electric car in Hong Kong might help to clear them up.

After coming off of a blockbuster year in the U.S., the Model S is expected to charge into Hong Kong later this year practically doubling the number of electric vehicles on the road in the city.

The Palo-Alto, Calif.-based company said it has received hundreds of orders for its new Model S sedan in Hong Kong, according to a Bloomberg report.

“Our number is over all electric cars in Hong Kong combined,” Kenneth Lui, Hong Kong sales manager for Tesla, is quoted as telling the business news source.

According to Hong Kong’s Transport Department, the city had 303 registered private electric cars at the end of April, according to the Automotive News article. And while a projected boost of 300 or so more electric cars on the road in Hong Kong credited to Tesla is hardly earth-shattering when it comes to overall numbers in the world of cars, it definitely speaks to the growing global appeal of the Tesla brand in the niche luxury EV segment.

Pricing for Hong Kong’s version of the Model S, which goes on sale in the city this Winter, has yet to be disclosed.  The four-door luxury EV starts at $69,000 in the U.S. and can be optioned up north of $90,000.

Overall, Tesla sales are expected to reach 21,000 units this year, with deliveries to Europe and Asia beginning in the second half of 2013, according to the industry news report.

It’s all further indication that when it comes to the luxury electric vehicle segment, Tesla is quickly becoming the brand in which all others will be measured – if they aren’t already.
