If you’re looking to super-size your phone, we think the LG Optimus G Pro is a decent choice. That 5.5-inch 1080p display is a major temptation and it’s backed up by top of its class performance. It’s an attractive package, but no device is ever perfect. We’ve uncovered a few LG Optimus G Pro problems and issues that might be vexing you, and some ways to fix them.
Glitch: Wi-Fi drops randomly or won’t connect
If we were to draw up a league table of the most common problems people encounter with new devices this would easily be the champion every year. The combination of different routers, smartphones or tablets, and software, makes for lots of possible issues and they’re not always easy to trace. There are lots of things you can try to get that Wi-Fi going again.
Potential solutions:
- The first rule of IT support – turn it off and on again. Reboot your router and your LG Optimus G Pro and see if that works. You could also try going to Menu > Settings > Networks > Wi-Fi and deleting your network, and then scan and set it up fresh.
- Update your firmware. You should get OTA (over-the-air) updates for your LG Optimus G Pro. For your router visit the manufacturer website or check with your ISP to find updates. If your router is more than a few years old, this could be the problem.
- Try changing the settings on your router. You could change the channel, the mode, turn MAC filter off, and set a static IP. You should refer to your manufacturer or ISP to find instructions. If you take a look at your network on your LG Optimus G Pro using the free Wi-Fi Analyzer app you can see how crowded the channels in your area are and work out if a change is likely to work before you do it.
- If you’re on AT&T then it might be worth disabling the AT&T Smart Wi-Fi app because some people have reported issues with it. You can find it in Settings > General > Apps > All apps. Click on it and select Force stop and then Disable. You can always re-enable it again. Once disabled it will drop to the bottom of your All apps list.
Annoyance: Lagging or stuttering
With a 1.7GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM you really shouldn’t experience any lag on your Optimus G Pro. Unfortunately sometimes software conflicts or hardware faults can cause a problem. If you find that you are getting lag or stutter then there are things worth trying.
Potential solutions:
- It’s most likely an app that’s causing the lag. You can try ensuring that everything is up to date and then go through your apps one by one disabling them to see if there’s any improvement. If you have a lot of apps then that could take a long time. Some people have reported live wallpapers or launchers as the cause of lag so try removing them, too. The quick way to check is to back up via Settings > System settings > Backup & reset > Backup my data. Make sure you back up important files like photos to your computer or the cloud then factory reset the device via Settings > System settings > Backup & reset > factory data reset > Reset phone > Erase everything. If the lag is gone then you know it was something you installed that was causing it.
- If the factory reset doesn’t work, and you’re still experiencing lag, then you could have faulty hardware. Try contacting LG or your carrier or retailer and arrange a replacement handset.
Problem: Overheating and screen dimming
Some owners have reported overheating issues with the Optimus G Pro. This is another complaint that’s becoming increasingly common with all smartphone models. There isn’t room for a fan, and as devices get more powerful they require more juice and they inevitably get hotter. When the Optimus G Pro gets too hot it will start to dim the screen to help reduce the temperature. In extreme cases it might shut off completely.
Workaround:
- Take a break and let it cool down. If you plan to play a graphically intensive game for hours or watch a lot of video then you can expect your device to get hot. Bear in mind that if you’re in a hot room or area, that can have a big impact. You can always turn the phone off and take the battery out for a few seconds to allow it to cool faster.
Potential solution:
- If your Optimus G Pro is getting hot even when you aren’t using intensive apps or games, or streaming video, then it’s possible you have a hardware problem. It could be worth your while trying to arrange a replacement handset or a repair with LG, your carrier, or your retailer.
Bug: Audio interference when streaming via Bluetooth
Some people have encountered issues with crackling or other unwelcome sounds when they are trying to stream audio via Bluetooth to speakers or a headset. This crops up a lot on various devices, but it’s often quite easy to get around.
Workaround:
- This might be due to a conflict with the Wi-Fi. Try turning Wi-Fi off and see if that resolves the issue.
