Podcasting Numbers Were Overhyped

We reported yesterday that Pew Internet and American Life had released a survey claiming that 30% percent of iPod owners have downloaded a podcast, which comes out to about 6 million people. Sound far-fetched? New evidence shows that the survey is most likely not accurate and even Pew Internet and American Life has gone on record stating they do not believe those figures.

“Pew research director Mary Madden believes the numbers of people actually using the Internet to broadcast and/or download pods is smaller than the 6 million figure cited in the organization’s latest study, however.

“Our question to the survey respondents on this was very broad. We asked if they had ever downloaded a podcast or radio Internet program,” she says. In other words, the survey also netted affirmatives from people who may have listened to an NPR program on the radio, for example, and then gone to the NPR site to download it. “

Podcasts are coming to Twitter as part of a major Spaces revamp
A podcast playing on Twitter Spaces.

Twitter is integrating podcasts into the new Spaces Tab in the Twitter app for Android and iOS. In a blog post, the social media platform said it will be testing the redesigned Spaces Tab on a group of random users worldwide starting today, but only in English.

The revamped Spaces Tab groups podcasts and other audio content together into hubs based on category. Podcasts are Spaces' new star, and there are audio stations themed around different topics — music, news, sports, entertainment, travel, etc. — all personalized by an algorithm for different users to listen to based on who they follow on Twitter and what topics interest them.

Spotify app update finally lets you separate your music and podcasts
spotify app home page music podcasts separate tabs reorganization

Spotify is giving the Home page of its app a major makeover by creating separate feeds for music and podcasts. The audio streaming company announced the changes on Tuesday, and the new feature is starting to roll out to Android users, with the iOS app set to receive it soon after.

The revamped Home page will have two separate tabs on the top left corner of the screen labeled "Music" and "Podcasts & Shows." Tapping on the Music tab will take you straight to the music you've been listening to and give you playlist and artist recommendations based on the genres you hear the most. The Podcast & Shows tab will immediately show you the latest episodes of your favorite podcasts, as well as give you suggestions for new ones.

Notifications on the Apple Watch Series 7.

Apple is expected to launch the Apple Watch Series 8 at the iPhone 14 event in September this year. The event is just around a month away now, and a new leak about the Apple Watch Series 8 has emerged, providing some information about the company’s upcoming wearables. Interestingly, it contradicts some information about the watch's design that surfaced previously.

According to Twitter user @ShrimpApplePro, the base models of the Apple Watch Series 8 will feature the same Series 7-like design, refuting the earlier rumors about the possibility of a new flat-edged screen.
