Cellphones Could Hit $25 Price In 12 Months

Among respondents to the survey, 80 percent reported a belief that a low-end GSM handset with a total bill-of-materials cost of $25 can be achieved within two years or less, while 51 percent believe this level can be reached within one year or less. In addition to electronic and mechanical components, the cost of the handset as presented in the survey was defined to include battery, testing, final assembly, software and IP licensing, and product packaging.

“We have believed for some time, based on the trends in product design and component cost which we see in our product teardown analyses, that very low-cost cellular handsets will emerge in the next several years,” comments David Carey, president of Portelligent. “We think this survey is significant in that it shows that a substantial majority of our customers seem to agree on the near-term reality of the $25 handset, as they represent diverse points of view within the electronics industry, including semiconductor and device makers, handset makers, and wireless service providers. With the handset industry reaching maturity throughout the developed world, more economic cellular phone designs will be a key factor in securing ‘the Next Billion’ wireless subscribers.”

In structuring the survey, Portelligent distinguished 14 categories of electronic components and other items in a “strawman BOM” (Bill-of-Materials) for the $25 handset. When asked about these individual categories, survey respondents reported that target cost levels were most likely to be achieved in printed circuit boards, passive devices, baseband processing ICs, and product casings and enclosures. The most challenging categories for achievement of the target costs were display modules, radio transmitter and receiver ICs, memory devices, and software and intellectual property.

OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Motorola could get Android 12 dynamic theme support
Google Pixel 6 Pro widgets.

Android 12 brings a long overdue visual overhaul to the Google OS. The Material You theming system changes the appearance of your device, including the colors of UI elements based on the current wallpaper. Since other Android manufacturers have their own Android skins, it was unknown if the feature would be coming to devices other than the Pixels. Now, it appears that Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Xiaomi, and more smartphones could get Android12's dynamic themes support.

As of now, the theming system -- code-named Monet -- is exclusive to Google's own Pixel devices. However, Mishaal Rahman (on Twitter) has found a new code commit in Google's Material Components library that is titled "Add supporting manufacturer list of dynamic colors"

Android 12 with Material You launches today, hits Pixel phones in coming weeks
Google Pixel 6 Image Composite.

Google today made the final release of Android 12 source code available after a long beta-testing period, but it's important to note that it still won't roll out to the Pixels or other devices just yet. The new update will land first on older Pixels in the coming weeks, though it'll look best on the Google Pixel 6 when that releases later this month. This update comes with a large design overhaul known as Material You, and a bundle of privacy and security tweaks.

The biggest change is the company's new Material You design language. When the update rolls out, Pixel owners will find that their phone's interface will become a lot more attuned to their wallpaper choices thanks to Google's dynamic color theming system. These colors will apply to parts of the user interface, from the notification center and lock screen to even icons on the home screen and inside of apps that have been updated to support it. The company has also debuted new widgets to match Apple's after letting Android's widget system stagnate for a while. Several parts of the interface have also been redesigned to be larger and bubblier than they were on Android 11.
