NVIDIA today announced the release of their latest trump card against arch rivals ATI, in the form of their GeForce 7800 GT GPU, the latest variant based upon NVIDIA’s GeForce 7800 architecture and following on from the June 2005 release of NVIDIA’s GeForce 7800 GTX GPU solution.
Representing a lower price point solution based on NVIDIA’s latest GPU architecture, the GeForce 7800 GT GPU coming with a clock speed of 400MHz, features four less fragment units and one less vertex unit than the current flagship GeForce 7800 GTX GPU from NVIDIA.
Continuing with the recently launched tradition of ‘hard launches’, NVIDIA announced immediate availability of GeForce 7800 GT based solutions from add-in-card manufacturers and system integrators.
Ujesh Desai, General Manager of desktop GPUs at NVIDIA said ‘GeForce 7-based products have won over 50 awards and industry experts have praised NVIDIA for pioneering Shader Model 3.0, HDR lighting, and SLI technology—validating the GeForce 7 architecture as the must-have graphics technology for today and tomorrow’s PC gaming.’
Attempting a further triumph against ATI and their, yet to be released, R520 solution, NVIDIA stepped up the ante with the launch of their ‘The Power Of 3’ marketing campaign.
Citing features such as Scalable Link Interface (SLI) support, High Dynamic-Range (HDR) Lighting and Shader Model 3.0 offered by NVIDIA solutions, Santa Clara, CA based NVIDIA have taken the advantage to not only boast the advanced features offered by their own solutions, but directly discredit the omission of these same features from the competitors products, with phrases such as ‘You don’t use a typewriter to write critical communications or a 56K modem to connect to the Internet. So why settle for outdated graphics technology for your PC?’
It remains to be seen how ATI responds, but could we see some ‘stoking of the fire?’ – Let’s stay tuned.
