Nokia today announced they’d started deliveries of a new wireless, Linux-based Internet tablet. Called the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, it is available now in Europe for around 350 euros and expected to hit American shores shortly.
The Nokia 770, said Nokia, runs an operating system which is based on Linux and Open Source technologies. The tablet, which measures 5.5†x 3.1†x 0.7†and weighs 8.1 ounces, has a 4.13″, 800 x 480 high resolution touch screen. It uses wireless 802.11b/g technology to connect to the Internet through a local access point. It offers support for a variety of Internet related functions, including web browser with flash player, email client, Internet radio, news reader, file manager and media players.
Other features of the Nokia 770 include wireless Bluetooth technology, USB PC connectivity, a Memory Card expansion slot for RS-MMC, 3.5mm stereo audio out, a brushed metal cover and up to three hours of Internet usage time on a rechargeable Li-ion battery.
“This is the first step to creating an Open Source product for broadband and Internet services,†said Janne Jormalainen, Vice President of Convergence Products, Multimedia, Nokia. “We will be launching regular software updates. During the first half of year 2006 we will launch the next operating system upgrade to support more presence based functionalities such as VoIP and Instant Messaging.â€
