Tonino Lamborghini’s Android phone costs $4,000, but is weaker than a $350 Nexus 5

Tonino Lamborghini Antares

Heard of Lamborghini cars? Sure you have, but did you know about Tonino Lamborghini? Perhaps not. Named after and run by the son of Ferruccio Lamborghini, the man who started Automobili Lamborghini, it makes luxury goods such as sunglasses, watches, and furniture. It has dabbled in tech too, with several computers to its name, and now it has announced a smartphone.

Called the Antares, it’s exactly what you’d expect a luxury smartphone to be like. The body is made of hand crafted stainless steel and has a leather rear panel, and it comes in several different colors including, naturally, gold. However, while the gold model looks gaudy and unpleasant, the flat black models look considerable more appealing.

Tonino Lamborghini Antares GoldThe specs, however, don’t. On the front is a 4-inch touchscreen covered in Gorilla Glass, but the resolution is a disappointing 960 x 540 pixels. Inside is an unnamed 1.5GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM, so it’s going to have capable rather than blistering performance. A total of 32GB internal memory is yours to fill, and there’s a MicroSD card slot ready to double this amount.

There is a 13-megapixel camera with accompanying flash on the rear of the phone, and a monster 5-megapixel camera above the screen. It’s joined by a pair of speakers powered by a Yamaha amplifier. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean has been installed, but rather than leave it as Google intended, Tonino Lamborghini has slapped a custom interface over the top. In the early shots of the phone, you can see it has given Android a comprehensive visual makeover.

With all the technical details out of the way, we get down to the price. Tonino Lamborghini hasn’t officially confirmed it to us yet, but CNet UK says the Antares costs £2,500, which converts over to around $4,050. According to the flashy website, the phone can be purchased from the world famous Harrods department store in London, along with other outlets in Russia, China, Germany, Switzerland, France and a few other countries. However, the press release says the phone will be first available in Russia and China during December, with keen buyers in America and the UK having to wait until spring 2014 to buy one.

I record interviews for work. These are my favorite free recorder apps

Before you head to the app store on your phone to buy a voice-recording app, take a moment to consider the apps that may already be installed on your phone. Why? In my experience, they're likely all you really need. I’ve recorded interviews and voice-overs for work for years, and I’ve found the two best examples come preinstalled on your phone already, so they’re entirely free to use.

Google Pixel Tablet just got its first big discount and it’s worth a look
Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Tablets are a dime-a-dozen these days, with offerings from all the great brands including Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, and more. So, if you really want to stand out in a sea of similar tech, you need to do things a little differently. That's what Google's Pixel Tablet offers. How? It comes with a unique speaker dock that can be used to both charge the device and offer room-filling sound -- almost like a smart speaker add-on. Better yet, when your Pixel Tablet is docked it benefits from the Hub Mode, turning the device into a smart display, with digital photo frame support, smart home controls, and hands-free Google functionality. Of course, it could set you back at full price, normally $499 unless you find it included in a roundup of the best Google Pixel deals. Well, guess what? Thanks to a Best Buy Google Pixel Tablet deal, you can get it today for $439 and save $60. Hurry, though, it's part of Best Buy's recent 48-hour sale so it won't stick around for long.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Tablet
Okay, okay, so in our Google Pixel Tablet review, Joe Maring did give it less than stellar remarks, but he called out its reliable fingerprint sensor, comfortability during use and excellent speaker dock. Honestly, how many tablets come with a matching speaker dock that transforms the entire experience? This tablet also marks a "lot of firsts" for Google, as it's the first tablet from the company in nearly five years, the first Android tablet in eight years, and can be converted into a smart home display with the speaker dock. All of which are notable milestones.
