Brit loses $7.5m in Bitcoins after throwing away hard drive

PayPal won't let you buy Bitcoins

An unlucky British man is regretting discarding an old laptop hard drive after realizing it contained over $7.5m worth of Bitcoins. James Howells, from South Wales, originally mined his 7,500 coins in 2009, when Bitcoins were worth a fraction of their current value.

After complaints from his girlfriend about the noise and heat coming from the laptop, Howells stopped mining new Bitcoins, and quickly forgot about the hoard after spilling lemonade over his Dell XPS N1710 in 2010.

The laptop was dismantled for parts and Howells discovered the old hard drive in summer this year, promptly throwing it away. He realized his mistake last week. “I’ve searched high and low,” he told the Guardian. “I’ve tried to retrieve files from all of my USB sticks, from all of my hard drives. I’ve tried everything just in case I had a backup file, or had copied it by accident. And … nothing.”

In an attempt to recover the drive, Howells has visited the local landfill site. “I had a word with one of the guys down there, explained the situation. And he actually took me out in his truck to where the landfill site is. He said something from three or four months ago would be about three or four feet down.”

Despite missing out on the fruits of his investment, Howells is mostly philosophical about the affair. “I’m at the point where it’s either laugh about it or cry about it,” he said. “Why aren’t I out there with a shovel now? I think I’m just resigned to never being able to find it. It’s my mistake throwing the hard drive out, at the end of the day.”

Bitcoin prices continue to soar and have topped $1,000 repeatedly over the last couple of days. There are currently just over 12 million Bitcoins in existence, with the master algorithm capable of creating around 21 million in total.

Trying to buy a GPU in 2023 almost makes me miss the shortage
Two AMD Radeon RX 7000 graphics cards on a pink surface.

The days of the GPU shortage are long over, but somehow, buying a GPU is harder than ever -- and that sentiment has very little to do with stock levels. It's just that there are no obvious candidates when shopping anymore.

In a generation where no single GPU stands out as the single best graphics card, it's hard to jump on board with the latest from AMD and Nvidia. I don't want to see another GPU shortage, but the state of the graphics card market is far from where it should be.
This generation is all over the place

This tiny ThinkPad can’t quite keep up with the MacBook Air M2
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano Gen 3 rear view showing lid and logo.

While the laptop industry continues to move toward 14-inch laptops and larger, the 13-inch laptop remains an important category. One of the best is the Apple MacBook Air M2, with an extremely thin and well-built chassis, great performance, and incredibly long battery life.

Lenovo has recently introduced the third generation of its ThinkPad X1 Nano, one of the lightest laptops we've tested and a good performer as well. It's stiff competition, but which of these two diminutive laptops stands apart?
