For the second year in a row, Thanksgiving has proved to be a record-breaking day for Instagram. Users of the photo sharing service posted more images in a single day than ever before, though exact numbers haven’t yet been released by Instagram.
“We saw record usage as Instagrammers shared a heaping helping of holiday cheer,” said Instagram in a blog post on its official site. “Your Thanksgiving and Hanukkah-related photos and videos helped make yesterday our busiest day on Instagram so far.”
“We continue to be inspired by our community and are truly humbled that so many of you choose to capture and share your holiday moments on Instagram. So from the Instagram team to you, we say ‘thank you.’ We hope you enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.”
This year Thanksgiving overlapped the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, a combination that won’t happen again for tens of thousands of years. The overlap may have had something to do with the high volume of posts, as photos of turkeys, latkes and family reunions flooded onto the network.
Those of you with long memories won’t have been surprised by the news: Thanksgiving Day 2012 was also a record breaker for Instagram. This time last year, over 10 million Thanksgiving-themed photos were shared, so the 2013 figures must be above this mark.
It’s been a busy year for Instagram, with the photo app introducing video recording functionality and rolling out its first set of advertisements. The outfit is also rumored to be planning a move into instant messaging before the end of the year.
