UPDATED: Green Goblin teased in ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2’ poster

A recently spotted, but as yet unreleased poster for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 suggests that the wall crawler will face three enemies, including the Green Goblin. The picture of the poster was taken by Twitter user Jesser Piedra (and reposted by Comingsoon.net), and the timing seems to coincide with a new trailer Sony has confirmed will release on December 5.

In the image above, you can clearly see Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, along with two others. The image on the left appears to be a heavily robot-influenced Rhino, but that is unconfirmed. If it is him, it opens up another line of questioning/speculation.

The character of Spencer Smythe was teased to be in the film as an employee of Oscorp, via a mock Tumblr account for The Daily Bugle. In the comics, Spencer Smythe was the creator of the “Spider Slayers,” robotic constructs created (originally on the dime of J. Jonah Jameson) to capture and unmask Spider-Man. Smythe’s efforts eventually led to his death, prompting his son Alistair to take up his mantle and create more Spider Slayers.

Rhino_02In the Tumblr account that contains a “news post” discussing the attack on Oscorp in the first film, Smythe is listed as the head of the engineering division. He is said to be responsible for “a flight harness for the military and significant advancements in robotics.” That seems to explain where the Green Goblin’s glider comes from, but it may also hint at Smythe being responsible for the Rhino’s new robotic look. The Rhino will be played by Paul Giamatti, and images of Giamatti wearing a rig designed for CGI suggest the look of the Rhino will be effects heavy. Mind you, that’s all supposition, but it fits with what we know of the Rhino (assuming that is the Rhino), and it fits with the tease of Smythe at Oscorp – assuming the image isn’t just a Spider Slayer, but that seems like a waste of Giamatti.

The real eye opener on the poster is the figure on a glider that appears to be Green Goblin. There may be more to the story than that, and it may be a precursor to the Goblin, who will be introduced in a later film. Spider-Man has faced several “goblin” enemies, including the Hobgoblin and a recent Grey Goblin. Even if it is the Green Goblin, it isn’t clear which one.

In the comics, there have been multiple people to don the Green Goblin mantle, but the two that stand out are Norman Osborn and his son Harry. Both characters are in the film, played by Chris Cooper and Dane DeHaan, respectively. In both the comics and the Sam Raimi trilogy of Spider-Man films, Norman Osborn was the truly villainous character, while Harry generally followed later out of a misguided sense of loyalty influenced by a variety of reasons, including insanity.

goblinThe character of Norman Osborn was only teased in the first film, and despite some ominous foreshadowing, he may not be the Green Goblin. Maybe Norman is just badly misunderstood and is really a loving, caring guy. Probably not, but you can’t take anything for granted at this point.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on May 2, 2014. The trailer, however, debuts this week.

Update: We’ve replaced the image on top with a better, higher resolution image directly from the film’s official page that grants a clearer look at the villains. Most notably is the look at the Goblin (or goblin-like character), that bears more than a passing resemblance to Dane DeHaan.  Check out the closer image on the right, and sound off in the comments with theories!

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is eyeing a fall 2023 release date
Miles Morales and Peter Parker stand together in Spider-Man 2.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has a new release window. According to a new PlayStation Blog post, the upcoming superhero game will launch sometime in 2023.

We haven't heard much about Marvel's Spider-Man 2 since it was first announced with a teaser trailer. All we knew was that it would launch sometime in 2023. According to developer Insomniac, we now know it'll launch in time for the holidays, barring delays.

PlayStation’s Spider-Man cameos in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer

In a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo, Insomniac Games' version of Spider-Man appears in the new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
In the trailer, we get a look at a hub where dozens of different versions of Spider-Man are hanging out and working together. This is where you can see what appears to be Insomniac's version of Spider-Man, as he is walking and talking to another Spider-Man in a black-and-red suit. The suit design is slightly different, with red patches on its legs, but otherwise, this character looks just like the Spider-Man from 2018's PS4 game. Could this be our first look at new versions of Peter and Miles' suits in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, or is Sony Pictures Animations just taking some creative liberties? Only time will tell.

It's unknown if Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will reference or set up this appearance. It's unlikely that Insomniac's Spider-Man will have much bearing on the narrative of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse -- chances are that this is little more than a cameo. Lots of Spider-Men will appear in this film, and a bunch of them are seen chasing Miles at the end. Twitter, in particular, seems pretty happy that the Spider-Man Unlimited version of Peter Parker is seen chasing Miles. Regardless, it's cool to see one of the most recent video game interpretations of the character represented in a Spider-Man film.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will hit theaters on June 2, 2023. Meanwhile, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is slated to be released for PlayStation 5 sometime next year. A page for the game appeared on the PlayStation Store earlier this week, but was taken down.
