HP announces new EliteBook, convertible notebook, and more

HP just took the wraps off a slew of new gear, including a trio of notebooks aimed at multiple crowds, and more. Here some of the highlights.

HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1

First up is the HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 (pictured above), which is built tough, having passed the U.S. military’s rigorous MIL-STD 810G durability tests. Weighing just over 3 pounds (3.3 to be exact) and wearing a cage that’s 15.9mm thick, HP says that it’s the slimmest Ultrabook they’ve put out in the Elite line.

The EliteBook Folio is powered by 4th generation dual-core Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors and will wear a 14-inch touchscreen-enabled display whose resolution will either clock in at 1600 x 900 or 1920 x 1080, depending on which display you opt for. Available storage options range from 128GB to 256GB SSDs, though graphics options are confined to integrated Intel HD 4400 and 5000 GPUs. The EliteBook Folio also offers multiple Internet connectivity options, from 802.11 a/b/g/n to 4G LTE. Available ports include a pair of USB 3.0 ports, DisplayPort, a headphone/microphone jack, and a card reader. The Folio also includes the ForcePad touchpad, which claims to replicate the gestures that are available on mobile devices. The HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 will start at $1,299 and is available starting today.

HP EliteBook Revolve G2

Those looking for a bit more pizazz from their notebook may want to consider the HP EliteBook Revolve G2, a convertible notebook which can be placed in tablet mode. Like the HP Elitebook Folio 1040 G1, the EliteBook Revolve G2 is built to last, surviving and earning the MIL-STD 810G mark of durability. Spearheaded by 4th generation Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 CPUs and an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 touchscreen, the EliteBook Revolve G2 also offers storage options ranging from 128GB to 256GB. Internet connectivity comes in the form of 802.11a/b/g/c or ac, or mobile broadband. The chassis will store a backlit keyboard, along with a host of connectivity options, including a pair of USB 3.0 ports, DisplayPort, Ethernet, audio/mic, a card reader, and more.The HP EliteBook Revolve G2’s entry level price start at $1,364 and will be released on December 20.

HP Classmate notebook, EliteDesk & ProDesktop Mini PCs

Finally, HP refreshed the student-centric Classmate notebook, outfitting it with an Intel Celeron N2000 processor. If you’re in the market for a business desktop, HP’s new EliteDesk 800 G1 Desktop Mini and ProDesktop 600 G1 Desktop Mini were also revealed today. While the 800 is powered by 4th generation Intel Core processors, the 600 can ship with Celeron, Pentium, or 4th-gen Intel CPUs. Both are small form factor systems designed for ultra portability, and both will offer storage options ranging from 256GB to 1TB. The HP EliteDesk 800 G1 Desktop Mini’s asking price starts at $669, while the HP ProDesktop 600 G1 Desktop Mini will run you $489 and up. Both desktops will be available starting in April 2014.

HP's Spectre x360 13.5 is a prime example, making our lists of both the best 2-in-1s and best laptops and for quite some time representing the best that the class has to offer.

But Asus has been a serious player in this form factor as well, putting out several machines that have been close to making both lists. Its latest ZenBook S 13 Flip is a prime example, and it has an ace up its sleeve: it's a very light laptop that makes it easier to use as a tablet. Does that give it enough to dethrone the Spectre x360 13.5?

HP Envy x360 13 vs. Apple MacBook Air M2

HP's Envy x360 13 is an excellent convertible 2-in-1 for not a lot of money. It's extremely flexible, well-built, and it provides solid productivity performance while being priced to undercut much of the competition. That includes the Apple MacBook Air M2, an excellent laptop that's among the least expensive MacBooks.

If you're looking at 13-inch machines, then these two laptops should be on your shortlist. They're quite different, though, and so the choice between them isn't an easy one to make. We'll try to make it a little easier.

HP Spectre x360 13.5 vs. Apple MacBook Air M2

HP's Spectre x360 13.5 is the most refined convertible 2-in-1 available today and one of the best laptops overall, while the Apple MacBook Air M2 is an excellent, updated version of Apple's venerable machine. Both are outstanding laptops that should be on anyone's shortlist for their next upgrade.

If you're shopping for a premium 13-inch laptop, you'll run into these two. It's a tough choice, but one of them is a better overall choice than the other.
