Tesla says the Model X, the long-wheel base hatch wagon-y thing with gullwing doors, will be coming in 2014.
This should be good news for the folks who’ve been monetarily lining up for the tallest Tesla. The Model X concept was unveiled in concept form in early 2012. Within less than a week, the Model X became the – then – best-selling Tesla, bringing in $40 million in reservations.
Based upon the Model S, the Model X will be a bit more utilitarian, but also more expensive. The Model X with its bigger body and taller ride height should put its asking price above that of the $63,570 Model S.
Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s chief designer, confirmed to German car site Audibild that the Model X is almost ready and should be unveiled in mid-2014.
Tesla isn’t stopping there, though. It also has plans to unveil its all-new entry-level sedan, tentatively named the Model E, at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. Although it will be priced just under $40,000, Tesla hopes its smaller sedan will compete with the Nissan LEAF, which starts at $29,650. Expect the Model E to pack a 200-mile range battery pack, which will make the LEAF’s 75-mile range look laughable.
Reportedly, Tesla will be giving its Model E distinctive bodylines, as it is keen to keep it separate from the Model S, at least at a glance.
We’ll likely be learning more about both the Model X and the Model E very soon. So be sure to check back for more.
