John Carmack has another bun in the oven. Despite his side project dabbling in space flight, the programming guru will apparently have time to design yet another new game engine for an upcoming id Software project.
The news comes via Todd Hollenshead, id’s CEO, who spoke with GamesIndustry.biz about the upcoming title. Besides the promise of Carmack’s involvement, Hollenshead also noted that the game would be completely original. "We are working on an all-new franchise: it’s not Doom, it’s not Quake, it’s not Wolfenstein, it’s not Enemy Territory, it’s not even Commander Keen,” he told GamesIndustry.
Although id has published many different titles outside those franchises, in-house development hasn’t strayed from those keystone names in a decade. Hollenshead offered no clues as to what players can expect. “We can’t really talk any details about it; we’ll see about when the timing is right for an announcement. We like to be able to talk about stuff that we can show at the same time and it’s not really ready to show yet.”
Carmack’s latest projects have been DOOM RPG and Orcs and Elves, both for mobile platforms.
