MetaWatch unveils new high-end smartwatch by former Vertu designer

metawatch launches meta smartwatch brand line

MetaWatch has kicked off 2014 with the launch of a new smartwatch brand.

Called Meta, the new product line is the result of a collaboration with the acclaimed Nokia and Vertu designer Frank Nuovo, with the company evidently intent on creating a watch buyers will want to wear short sleeves with.

That’s right, the first smartwatch born from the partnership looks set to turn heads among hipsters on the hunt for a stylish device built solidly with premium materials. The new wearable tech, available in a range of colors, is being shown off this week at CES in Las Vegas.

Nuovo says he’s worked to make the smartwatch feel as comfortable as possible on the wrist by moving the pivot points that hold the band in place closer to the center of the main watch body, enabling the device to “flow and melt” on your wrist. We’re not exactly sure what he means by that, but we sure like the sound of it.

MetaWatch, a company set up by former Fossil engineers in 2011, is pushing its new high-end smartwatch on the theme of ‘art of the glance’. Nuovo explains: “Art of the glance is about being able to casually glance at your digital life without being consumed by it. If you’re out with somebody, pay attention to them. If you need to know if an email or message came in, you can glance nicely, easily, at your Meta, and see what’s going on without disrupting the flow of the day.”

A smartwatch that doesn’t intrude on a social occasion certainly sounds appealing, but we can imagine a device this striking resulting in constant disruptions through the day, as bedazzled friends and co-workers lean in to take a closer look. At least that way it’d be generating conversation rather than acting as a barrier between those present.

We don’t know much about the watch’s features and functionality just now, though ‘art of the glance’ suggests a distinct lack of bells and certainly no whistles. However, as with earlier wrist-based tech from the company, we’re expecting it to pair with both iOS and Android devices.

The new Meta watch should hit the market in the spring, though there’s no word yet on pricing.

I record interviews for work. These are my favorite free recorder apps

Before you head to the app store on your phone to buy a voice-recording app, take a moment to consider the apps that may already be installed on your phone. Why? In my experience, they're likely all you really need. I’ve recorded interviews and voice-overs for work for years, and I’ve found the two best examples come preinstalled on your phone already, so they’re entirely free to use.

Google Pixel Tablet just got its first big discount and it’s worth a look
Google Pixel Tablet on its charging dock.

Tablets are a dime-a-dozen these days, with offerings from all the great brands including Apple, Samsung, Lenovo, and more. So, if you really want to stand out in a sea of similar tech, you need to do things a little differently. That's what Google's Pixel Tablet offers. How? It comes with a unique speaker dock that can be used to both charge the device and offer room-filling sound -- almost like a smart speaker add-on. Better yet, when your Pixel Tablet is docked it benefits from the Hub Mode, turning the device into a smart display, with digital photo frame support, smart home controls, and hands-free Google functionality. Of course, it could set you back at full price, normally $499 unless you find it included in a roundup of the best Google Pixel deals. Well, guess what? Thanks to a Best Buy Google Pixel Tablet deal, you can get it today for $439 and save $60. Hurry, though, it's part of Best Buy's recent 48-hour sale so it won't stick around for long.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Tablet
Okay, okay, so in our Google Pixel Tablet review, Joe Maring did give it less than stellar remarks, but he called out its reliable fingerprint sensor, comfortability during use and excellent speaker dock. Honestly, how many tablets come with a matching speaker dock that transforms the entire experience? This tablet also marks a "lot of firsts" for Google, as it's the first tablet from the company in nearly five years, the first Android tablet in eight years, and can be converted into a smart home display with the speaker dock. All of which are notable milestones.
