LG Viewty Packs Real Camera, DivX Support

LG Viewty Packs Real Camera, DivX Support

The “camera” in camera phones has long been thought of as a joke among anyone with more serious photographic ambitions, but that might not be the case for long. LG’s KU990 Viewty packs many of the same features found on point-and-shoot cameras into one that’s nestled into a phone, including a 5-megapixel sensor.

Without the dedicated call and end buttons on its back, the Viewty might actually be mistaken for a normal camera, given the way its lens and flash dominate the back side of it. There’s not even a keypad – it’s accessible through a three-inch-wide touch screen that doubles as a viewfinder for camera use. Besides its camera-like form factor and respectable resolution, the Viewty gets manual focus, an image stabilizer, and the ability to recognize handwriting on its LCD screen.

Built-in DivX compatibility, just announced Thursday, also endows the phone with some impressive video features. Native DivX movie files can be transferred to the phone and played back without conversion, and there’s even a TV output for sharing. High-speed HSDPA 3.6 internet access also allows the phone to pull video off the internet from online video communities like Stage6.com and play them live. As a camera, the Viewty doubles as a video camera and can actually capture video at 120 frames per second.

Unfortunately for stateside photo enthusiasts, the Viewty will only appear in Europe when it’s released in mid-October. Though LG does intend to spread the phone to other regions, it hasn’t announced how long that will take, or even given prices for the initial European launch.

Huawei’s P50 Pro launches with 200x camera zoom, but leaves out 5G
huawei p50 pro news series keynote image copy

Huawei has launched the Huawei P50 and Huawei P50 Pro, its flagship smartphones for 2021, in China. Huawei has always captured hearts with its impressive camera systems, and the P50 Pro is no exception, plus there’s no chance you’ll mistake the phone for any other due to its distinctive design. However, neither P50 series phones have 5G connectivity, which is something of a shock for a top-spec 2021 smartphone.

There’s also the question about whether either P50 model will ever be released outside China. That’s not known at the moment, but in the meantime let’s take a closer look at what we do know about the new Huawei P50 series.
Huawei P50 Pro
The back of the Huawei P50 Pro is dominated by what looks like two large, circular cameras, but these are actually glass modules that hold multiple camera lenses. The unusual design certainly stands out. They contain a main 50-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 40MP monochrome camera, a 13MP ultra-wide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera. The telephoto camera can apparently shoot at up to 200x zoom, but it's not known what optical zoom levels are featured.

The Find X3 Pro has a 60x zoom ‘microscope’ camera, and it’s so much fun
Oppo Find X3 Pro camera module

There are camera gimmicks, and then there is Oppo’s mad 60x zoom “microscope” camera on the Oppo Find X3 Pro. It’s absolutely one of the most gimmicky camera features I’ve come across, yet it’s so unique, so simple yet satisfying to use, and most of the time takes such fun photos that I can’t stop using it.
A unique feature
On paper, the Find X3 Pro’s microlens should be terrible. It’s listed on the spec sheet as a 3-megapixel, f/3.0 micro lens with fixed focus, and I certainly feared it was nothing more than a rebranded 2-megapixel macro lens, and we’ve complained about those for a while. All the Find X3 Pro’s micro lens does is take super close-up photos, apparently at a 60x zoom level, giving you the impression of looking through a microscope. To give Oppo credit, it’s certainly not a camera we’ve seen before, but would anyone actually ever want to use it?

Vivo shakes things up with new gimbal-equipped X50 Pro camera phone
vivo x50 pro news gimball

Smartphone innovator Vivo has announced the X50 Pro, a camera-centric device with a shake-eliminating gimbal in the camera that's ready to take super steady photos and video regardless of the conditions, day or night. While we are used to seeing optical image stabilization, digital stabilization, and even artificial intelligence (A.I.) used to minimize blur and shake, this is the first time a gimbal system has been used inside a smartphone.
