Yahoo Stops Mash-ing

Yahoo Stops Mash-ing

If you were a fan of Mash, Yahoo’s social networking venture, you should already know the news. As of September 29, the service will no longer exist. The company has already written to members, advising them to save any data they have on the service.

Mash lasted just about a year, but never managed to gain any traction against the big social networks, in spite of Yahoo’s clout.

The end of Mash won’t affect Yahoo 360, the company says. As of the end of September, any remaining links to Mash will go directly to the Yahoo site.

However, this probably won’t be the end of the story. In a statement the company said:

“As you may remember, we launched Mash as an experimental profile service with the goal of providing an interactive and social way of connecting with others.”

“Yahoo has announced we will soon be launching a new profile experience to work across the network, in the effort to make all of Yahoo! more social.”

That “experience” will be Yahoo Open Strategy, first announced in April, which has ties to Google’s Open Social, according to the Financial Times.

Windows 11 now stops brute force cyberattacks right in their tracks
Two windows laptops sit on a wooden table.

Not all threats to your computer come from viruses and dodgy emails. Some people will simply try to smash their way into your PC by generating as many passwords as possible until they gain access, like a lock picker. Windows 11 can now stop that.

The most recent Windows 11 build blocks these brute force attacks with an Account Lockout Policy. Windows will automatically lock down accounts, including administrator accounts, after 10 failed login attempts.

Stop worrying so much about benchmarks when buying a new GPU
A hand grabbing the RTX 3090 Ti graphics card with Respec series logo in front.

GPU prices are finally normal, and you might have found yourself in recent weeks browsing graphics cards reviews to see which ones top the charts. After all, the best graphics cards live and die based on their performance in gaming benchmarks, right?

But those benchmarks are far from a definitive answer, and in most cases, they skew the conversation away from the games you actually play and the experiences they offer.
