PS4 sales top 7 million worldwide, 1 million sold in the last month alone

ps4 sales tops 7 million worldwide 1 sold last month alone launch 4

The PlayStation 4 has sold over 7 million units around the world since its November 2013 launch, Sony confirms. The sales figures reflect the most accurate count as of April 6, 2014, and include around one million units sold in the last month alone.

Sony went on to note that as of April 13, 2014, more than 20.5 million pieces of software for the PS4 have been purchased in stores and through digital downloads on the PlayStation Network.

“The response from the global gaming community for PS4 has been overwhelming and we are truly humbled that gamers are selecting PS4 as their next generation console of choice,” Sony’s President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Andrew House, said. “The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months.”

The numbers mark an increase of one million units since Sony’s last sales update in March 2014, when it confirmed 6 million units sold. That previous figure had the benefit of including the last, major regional launch for the PS4. On February 22 Sony launched the PS4 in Japan, where it sold more than 322,000 units in just two days.

Sony went on to release a few more numbers showing off the reaction to the system’s social capabilities. Since its launch, PS4 users have shared content more than 135 million times using the DualShock 4’s “Share” button. Users have also initiated more than 4.9 million gameplay broadcasts on Twitch and Ustream, and joined more than 90 million spectate sessions.

Sony was also quick to point out that several major releases are on the way for the PS4, including: Watch Dogs, Destiny, The Order 1886, and more. The indie game scene will continue to expand as well thanks to titles like The Witness, Transistor, and Daylight.

Update: The 7 million units sold refer to consoles sold directly to customers, as opposed to units sold to retailers.

Team Cherry confirmed that the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong will be on two more platforms at launch: PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
The official PlayStation Twitter account revealed the news this morning, adding PS4 and PS5 to a list of Hollow Knight: Silksong platforms that include PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is a sequel to Hollow Knight, one of the most critically acclaimed Metroidvania games of the past decade. Hollow Knight: Silksong follows Hornet, a character from the first game, as she explores the unfamiliar world of Pharloom. When Team Cherry announced the indie in February 2019, it only confirmed that the game was in development for PC, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch.
The game went MIA after an appearance at E3 2019, only for it to triumphantly reemerge as one of the first announcements of the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase in June 2022. Although we know that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be available through Xbox Game Pass on PC and Xbox platforms, it's good to know that those who prefer to try the game on Nintendo Switch or PlayStation will still have access to the game on day one.
Unfortunately, this PlayStation announcement did not come alongside a new trailer or release date confirmation, so Hollow Knight fans are still left eagerly awaiting its follow-up. Microsoft did claim that every game in its June showcase was "targeted to launch in the next 12 months," though, so it's very possible that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be released for PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S in the first half of 2023.
