Ubisoft’s open world hacker adventure Watch Dogs is out on May 27, and a newly announced ebook that’s releasing alongside it will touch on what happens after the events of the game’s story. Watch Dogs //n/Dark Clouds shifts the focus away from game protagonist Aiden Pearce and onto Mick Wolfe, an ex-military tough guy who gets drawn into Chicago’s underworld hacker community.
The ebook is the work of author John Shirley, who previously worked on a couple of Borderlands books, BioShock Rapture, and a novelization of Hollywood’s Doom adaptation. Shirley is an accomplished writer outside of the gaming space, having written everything from cyberpunk fiction (a good fit for Watch Dogs) to multiple Blue Öyster Cult songs (no joke).
“Working on Watch Dogs was enormously interesting to me because its world offers the convergence of cyberpunk and the edgy tech reality of our times; it all plays out with action and energy against the inner city backdrop that I thrive in” the author said in a prepared statement. “With hack tech in one hand and gun in the other, Aiden Pearce is a believable fusion of hacker and action hero who deliberately slips between the cracks of society to relentlessly pursue his agenda.”
The May 27 ebook will be available in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, with two formats: a standard text-only edition and an upgraded version featuring “interactive elements.” There’s no confirmed price yet, but you can keep up with the ebook right here. You can also learn more about what the deal is with Dark Clouds in the featurette below.
It’s worth noting that a recent Watch Dogs DLC Season Pass listing – which Ubisoft confirmed as legit – revealed plans for add-on story content featuring a new playable character. Given the ebook’s post-game plotline and the fact that it focuses on this Wolfe fellow, it’s fair to speculate that we’ll see the military vet pop up in the DLC as well, possibly as the mysterious playable character.
