Xiaomi teases Android tablet, looks a lot like the Lenovo Yoga Tablet

xiaomi celebrates 5th birthday news

While Xiaomi is a well-known smartphone developer, it has yet to enter the tablet space. However, if a teaser image from Chinese social media website Weibo is any indication, that is about to change. The teaser image shows us a tablet that seems quite familiar to one we’ve already reviewed.

Xiaomi-teaserAccording to the teaser image, Xiaomi’s upcoming tablet will sport the same cylindrical side that the Lenovo Yoga Tablet does. When we reviewed the Yoga Tablet, we came to love that cylindrical side. Not only did it allow for a comfortable reading experience and a sturdy kickstand, but thanks to the added girth, Lenovo packed in a large battery pack that allowed for fantastic battery life. If Xiaomi’s pictured tablet is any indication, we expect a similar experience out of it.

Where Xiaomi’s tablet will reportedly differ is in software. Not too long ago, Xiaomi published the Android ROM for its tablet-friendly MIUI, Xiaomi’s customized Android overlay. While it certainly has its fair share of similarities to iOS, it’s a clean interface that seems to play nice with the tablet form factor. We could see MIUI make its debut on Xiaomi’s tablet, but we’re on a wait-and-see approach.

Oddly, the teaser image doesn’t line up with recent leaks, which picture a tablet that looks nothing like the one that was teased. This tablet, seen below, sports an iPad Mini-like design and is rumored to be an entry-level device. GizChina reports that the “Mipad” will feature a 720p display powered by a Snapdragon 400 chipset, an Adreno GPU, and 1GB of RAM. It will reportedly run Android 4.3 and offer 8GB of internal storage and an 8-megapixel rear camera.

The teaser image reveals an April 23 date, so that could be the day when Xiaomi finally clears the air and announces either just one or several products.

Great for browsing, this 7-inch Android tablet is discounted to $49
The Onn Tablet Pro lying on a table.

For one of the cheapest tablet deals you can buy at the moment, check out Walmart and the Onn. 7-inch tablet. It's usually priced at $59 but it's enjoying a $10 price cut bringing it down to $49. While it won't be the fastest of tablets around, if you simply need one for basic web browsing or to entertain the kids on a long journey, it'll do the job well enough. Here's what else you need to know about it.

Why you should buy the Onn. 7-inch tablet
No Onn. tablet features in our look at the best Android tablets but don't let that put you off. This tablet is all about keeping things cheap yet cheerful. It has a 7-inch screen with a reasonable resolution of 1024 x 600. Alongside that is a 2GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of memory, and 32GB of storage. Clearly, this isn't going to be a fast tablet but it runs Android 11 (Go Edition) well enough. It's suited for any time you want to browse the internet without your phone or if you want to keep your kids busy. Thanks to the Android support, you can play a number of games here although don't count on anything too taxing without sluggish performance.

Who needs the Pixel Tablet? Amazon’s new Fire Max 11 looks great
Amazon Fire Max 11 tablet laying on a desk.

Amazon just announced a new tablet — and it's probably not what you were expecting. Amazon's latest foray into the Android tablet world is the Fire Max 11, and it aims to be far more premium and powerful than any of the company's previous offerings.

The announcement also comes at an interesting time. Google just opened preorders for the Pixel Tablet, the OnePlus Pad recently debuted to fairly good reviews, and rumors of new Samsung tablets are quickly picking up. But even with so much going on in the tablet space, the Fire Max 11 looks like it could make a compelling argument for itself.
