Standalone apps for Google Docs and Sheets now available for download

Even though Google’s Drive app is already available for both iOS and Android, and it contains Docs, Sheets, and Slides, the little search company that could has decided to launch dedicated apps for its document suite. You can now download Docs and Sheets for iOS and Android, with Slides coming soon.

According to Google, releasing these standalone apps will “make it easier for you to quickly find, edit and create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on the go.” If you don’t install the apps, the Drive app will prompt you to download them whenever you edit or create a document or spreadsheet. You’ll still be able to view and organize your files.

While there’s no drastic difference in functionality between the Drive-integrated apps and the standalone versions, you can the ability to view a list of recently-accessed documents, spreadsheets, or slides. In addition, offline support is built into the apps, so there will be no need to hunt for an Internet connection.

When most people think of the Google Play Store, the first thing that comes to mind is smartphones. However, the spread of the Android ecosystem is far broader than that, and Google is taking steps to increase awareness of this and make it easier for folks to find apps on the Play Store for their smart TVs, watches, and even cars.

In a blog post today, the Google Play team announced three significant changes that should make it easier for Android fans to discover apps for all their devices, right from their phone. This includes recommendations of apps for non-phone devices, a search filter to focus on only games optimized for non-phone devices, and even a remote install feature that will let you deliver those apps to your Android TV, Wear OS watch, or Android Automotive-equipped car.

The day has finally arrived for Android phones to get their big yearly update. Google released the stable Android 13 update today, and if you have a Pixel 4 or later model in your hand, the update notification will pop up soon. I’ve already got it on my Pixel 6a, and installation is underway.

Google says that phones from Samsung, OnePlus, Nokia, Oppo, Realme, and Xiaomi, among others, will start getting the update later this year. You can expect these brands to make an official announcement regarding the update road map for their respective phones in the next few days.

Unlike older Pixel A-series phones, the Pixel 6a comes with Google's flagship Tensor chip, which catapults it into the same segment as flagship smartphones, including the iPhone 13 series. Price-wise, the iPhone SE (2022) is a worthy competitor to the Pixel 6a. Google has always prided itself on the exceptional photography skills the Pixel series offers. While the company's enthusiasm hasn't translated to better sales of its flagship Pixel series, the Pixel A-series has aided in filling the gap. Apple launched the iPhone 13 Mini in September 2021, but it could be the last compact iPhone in Apple's brief time with the form factor. Despite its size, the iPhone 13 Mini features the mighty A15 chip, which can be anointed as the most powerful mobile phone chip yet.
