Ballmer Dismisses Chrome OS

Speaking at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans, company chief executive Steve Ballmer seemed remarkably calm about the prospect of competition from Google’s announced Chrome operating system.

"I don’t know if they can’t make up their mind or what the problem is over there. The last time I checked you don’t need two client operating systems."

He’s referring, of course, to the fact that Google already has Android, and also to the lesson Microsoft learned by having both Windows 95 and Windows NT.

In an interview with CNET, Ballmer said:

"To me the Chrome OS thing is highly interesting — it won’t happen for a year and a half and they already announced an operating system."

Microsoft isn’t planning any major changes, he noted:

"We don’t need a new operating system. What we do need to do is to continue to evolve Windows, Windows Applications, IE, the way IE works in totality with Windows, and how we build applications like Office… and we need to make sure we can bring our customers and partners with us."

Don’t trust that Google sign-in — how hackers are swiping passwords in Chrome
Google Chrome browser running on Android Automotive in a car.

Hackers are swiping passwords from Google accounts in Chrome, and it can happen from the official Google sign-in page. The vehicle being used is called the AutoIt Credential Flusher, and it was discovered by the researchers at OALabs. The attack locks you into your browser at the Google sign-in page and doesn't allow you to leave, all while logging your email and password as you sign into your Google account.

The attack leverages "kiosk mode" in Chrome, which is a limited full-screen interface that doesn't have elements like the address bar or navigation buttons. It's used mainly for demonstration purposes -- think a laptop on display at Best Buy. And this attack is using kiosk mode to annoy users enough that they give up their passwords. It also blocks some normal commands to exit full-screen mode, such as Esc and F11.

The macOS Sequoia update just launched. Here’s why you should install it
The iPhone Mirroring feature from macOS Sequoia being demonstrated at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024.

The macOS Sequoia update is finally here, bringing iPhone Mirroring, Safari updates, window tiling, and the new Passwords app to Mac. As promised, there are no Apple Intelligence features in this update, but they will start rolling out from next month.

iPhone Mirroring is the most exciting thing coming with this update, allowing you to check your messages, notifications, and apps without switching devices. The feature makes a lot of sense as the one time we truly don't need our phones is when we're already using a computer. Instead of taking your hands off the keyboard to pick up your iPhone, you can simply access it on your Mac like a phone-shaped app.
