Sinister director attached to helm Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie

Marvel Studios may be having some trouble finding a director its Ant-Man movie right now, but it’s having no such problem with its upcoming Doctor Strange movie.

Filmmaker Scott Derrickson, who is best known for his work behind the camera on recent horror movies Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, announced via Twitter that he’ll be directing Doctor Strange.

“My next movie will be STRANGE,” tweeted Derrickson along with a photo of himself (see below) reading an early issue of the Doctor Strange comic-book series

Anyone familiar with the darker, supernatural adventures of Marvel’s “Sorcerer Supreme” will likely attest that the filmmaker initially seems like a good fit for the project, which is currently lacking a release date. With the studio having reserved two upcoming release dates for as-yet-unidentified projects, it’s likely that Doctor Strange will slide into the schedule on July 8, 2016, or May 5, 2017. Where it ends up in the calendar could be determined by how quickly the film nabs a leading man, with the most recent rumor teasing that Johnny Depp could be circling the role.

It’s also interesting to note that Derrickson wasn’t among the four filmmakers reported to be on the “shortlist” for Doctor Strange back in February, which serves as a reminder that nothing is official in Hollywood until the studio — or someone directly involved with the project like an actor, director, or producer — says it’s official.

For those not familiar with the character, Doctor Strange was created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the world’s protector against threats from the mystical realm. He is often regarded as the Marvel universe’s most powerful magic user, earning him the title “Sorcerer Supreme.”

In the MCU, Marvel’s most important stories are in its Disney+ shows

At this point, just about everyone is familiar with the entertainment juggernaut that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become. The premiere of a new MCU movie is now a global event, with a long list of box-office records metaphorically incinerated by the ticket-buying crowds that turn out for each installment of the biggest film franchise in Hollywood's history.

But here's the secret that all of those breathless headlines about Marvel movies are hiding: The best storytelling within the MCU is actually happening on a much smaller screen.

How VFX gave Doctor Strange’s Gargantos a magic makeover

Superhero sorcerer Stephen Strange sent Marvel Studios back to the top of the box office with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which had Benedict Cumberbatch's titular hero explore the myriad dimensions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Not only did the film introduce a long list of new characters, but it also brought filmmaker Sam Raimi back to Marvel after the Evil Dead director helmed the original, pre-MCU trilogy of Spider-Man films. To no one's surprise, Raimi delivered one of the franchise's darkest, most horror-fueled films to date, complete with terrifying zombies, gruesome deaths, and Gargantos -- a massive, tentacled creature from a nightmarish dimension that tore apart Manhattan in the movie's wild, opening scene.

There's a long list of Marvel characters who could conceivably hold down their own show on Disney+. In this year alone, Marvel Studios has debuted new series centered around Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel. But the next hero in line for Disney+ stardom is considerably further down on the depth chart. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios is bringing Wonder Man to Disney+ as an original series.

Apparently, this show is already further along than most. Marvel has already lined up Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton to executive produce Wonder Man and potentially helm some episodes as well. Former Hawkeye and Community writer Andrew Guest will also executive produce Wonder Man and serve as the head writer.
