The mere mention of the possibility that Apple might include split-screen functionality in iOS 8 caused a real ruckus on the Internet. Nearly everyone was shocked and excited to hear that Apple was finally thinking beyond one window at a time.

Then, WWDC 2014 came and went, with no mention of what would have been a real standout feature. Of course, adding split-screen functionality would also have been a huge concession to the multitasking thinking behind Windows 8 and Android, so perhaps Apple wasn’t quite ready to hear the I-told-you-sos. Now, one developer has spotted a bit of code that indicates split-screen functionality is possible in iOS 8.

It seems that Apple did not consider its efforts at creating a split-screen effect in iOS 8 polished enough for a big reveal at WWDC, but it left the door open for developers in the meantime. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith alerted his followers to the presence of special code in iOS 8 that will allow the use of two apps side by side. You can even alter the size of the app windows to maximize the use of space for specific apps. Apple has inserted code that allows for windows in three sizes: 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4.

Theoretically, you’d be able to watch a show on Netflix, while taking a peek at your Twitter feed or your email inbox on the side. Some rumors hint that split-screen functionality will only arrive on the iPad Air and bypass the smaller iPad Mini, but so far, that’s just speculation. Apple may offer the split-screen feature on all iPads with iOS 8 installed, though it probably won’t offer it on the iPhone for obvious reasons.

It’s possible that Apple is still working on the split-screen feature, but it could also be waiting to debut it during what has become known as the iPad event during the fall. Apple often keeps a few new iOS features on the back burner, so that it has something interesting to show off during hardware events. Either way, it’s likely that we’ll be seeing this long-awaited feature soon.

For now, you can check out a demo of the multi-window feature in action. The following video was posted by the same developer who discovered the function in iOS 8 code:

iOS 16: How to add a different home screen wallpaper on your iPhone
An iPhone with iOS 16, showing the new Lock Screen.

Although Apple has always let you use nearly any image you want to decorate your iPhone's lock screen, last year's release of iOS 16 took that to a whole new level by adding support for multiple custom lock screens that can not only enhance a static image of your choice, but also show photo collections that update throughout the day and live, animated wallpapers that reflect the current weather, Earth from space, and more.

Shopping for an iPad 10.2? You need to know about this deal
The iPad 10.2 on a table.

With the 2022 Apple iPad in the market, you're correct in thinking that you can get the 2021 Apple iPad with a 10.2-inch screen for cheaper than usual. For example, Amazon has slashed the price of the tablet's Wi-Fi, 64GB model to a very affordable $270, for $59 in savings from its original price of $329. Among all the tablet deals online, this offer is among the ones that provide the best value for your money, but you'll need to act fast and complete your purchase as soon as possible because we're not sure when it will expire.

Why you should buy the Apple iPad 10.2
The 10th-generation Apple iPad is already available, but the 9th-generation Apple iPad has certain advantages on top of its lower price. In our 2022 Apple iPad versus 2021 Apple iPad comparison, you may want to go for the 9th-generation Apple iPad if the thicker bezels appeal to you for browsing, and if you've invested in multiple Lightning cables as the 10th-generation iPad uses a USB-C port for charging. Both tablets may be upgraded to iPadOS 16, so you won't be missing out on the newest version of Apple's operating system for its tablets.

The 6 biggest iOS 17 features that Apple stole from Android
iOS 17 logo on an iPhone, Android logo on an Android phone.

Apple made a big splash at WWDC 2023 this year, with the big headline announcement being the Vision Pro augmented reality headset. But we also got a glimpse of what’s to come with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, watchOS 10, and macOS 14 Sonoma.

Though iOS 17 appears to be more of a quiet release this year that focuses on refinement and quality-of-life improvements, I have mixed feelings overall. To be honest, I was a little underwhelmed with the iOS 17 announcement based on what was actually shown off on stage, but there are some very cool features that Apple didn’t make a big deal out of (when it should have).
