This definitely isn’t the first voice control app we’ve seen aimed at the connected home, but it does have some interesting features that make it a bit different from apps we’ve previously encountered.
Once you’ve downloaded and installed it, the app will prompt you to come up with a five-word verbal passcode. The app’s special listening algorithm is designed to not only identify the the specific words you speak, but also recognize the unique characteristics of your voice to confirm your identity. This essentially gives the app an extra layer of security — which isn’t surprising when you consider that the app was built by ADT.
Only if your spoken password passes muster will you be granted remote access to your security system, but once you’re in, you’ll be able to do things like arm/disarm it, and even control your lights, thermostats, and locks — all with verbal commands.
ADT still has a lot more work to do if it hopes to stay competitive amid a rising tide of cheap, easy-to-install DIY security/automation systems, but these kinds of thoughtful, useful, and super-secure applications are definitely nice to see from a traditional security provider.
