Android 2.0 Provides a Free Google Maps Navigation Feature

What has Google done with Android 2.0 that’s making mobile reviewers squeal in delight? Simple: Google has added free Google Maps Navigation GPS software to its new Android operating system (OS). The Droid is the first device with Google Maps Navigation, providing turn-by-turn voice guidance as a free feature of Google Maps. The service is powered by Google and connected to the Internet—also, this free navigation feature is constantly updated, providing the most recent maps, so the driver can avoid road blocks, traffic accidents and road construction in their local area.

To activate the “voice shortcut,” just simply say “Navigate to [your destination]” and Google Maps will respond, sending you on your way views of live traffic and street views all produced via satellite. Also, the Droid can now search along the route for upcoming businesses, gas stations and restaurants that won’t take you too far off your desired course.

If the Droid makes it big with consumers [like Google, Verizon, and Motorola hope it will], this navigation feature will pose a seriously threat to companies like TomTom and Garmin who specialize and charge for the same service.

Google is upgrading Android's default messages app with support for iMessage reactions and enhanced media sharing as it tries to lure over customers from Apple's iPhones over to Pixels and other Android phones. The new updates are rolling out this week to the U.S. and some worldwide countries.

The biggest change Google is bringing here is support for iMessage reactions, or tapbacks. While Google supports reactions between Android phones, and iPhones support reactions between iPhones, this is the first time both are being cross-compatible -- kind of. iPhone users will now have their tapbacks converted to emoji on Android phones, but Android users will still remain unable to send reactions to iPhones. This does mean an end to "Laughed at," style messages, for Android users at least.

Google is closing out 2021 with a variety of new features for Android fans that are aimed at helping people get more out of this holiday season. The search giant rounded up the new collection of Android features in a blog post, and they include some new Android Auto enhancements, updated widgets for its media apps, and more.

First off, Google is introducing a new Family Bell feature to encourage togetherness and help everyone stay on track. It’s basically a Google Assistant feature that can be set up from an Android phone, speaker, or smart display that alerts you and everyone else in your family when it’s time to do something important.

Google is making Maps even more helpful than it already is. At Google I/O 2021, the company announced a series of updates to Google Maps that will make it more helpful in day-to-day life, and improve features like the augmented reality (AR) view that Google launched in Maps last year.

Perhaps the most notable change to Maps is that Google is adding more detail in several places. For example, Google Maps will now show users where things like crosswalks, street signs, and intersection markers are straight from the normal map view. As noted by Google at the event, this could be very helpful for parents with strollers, those in a wheelchair, or those who just want to plan their exact walk. The more detailed view was actually already announced by Google in August, but is now more rolling out to 50 more cities around the world.
