Court order threatens sales of Motorola devices in Germany, including the Moto X

Motorola began selling its customizable Moto X handset in Germany last week, marking the first time people who live outside of the U.S. can access Motorola’s Moto Maker store. However, a court order looks to stop the sale of Motorola devices in Germany.

At the center of the court order is German laser engineering firm LPKF, which alleged that Motorola violated an antenna design patent. More specifically, the patent involves the process of placing the antenna onto a curved plastic design. A preliminary ruling by the Mannheim Regional Court went against Motorola Mobility USA and Motorola Deutschland, with the ruling prohibiting the sales of Motorola smartphones in Germany. The devices include the Moto G and Moto X, with Motorola even having to recall infringing devices, according to the ruling.

However, even though LPKF won its case in Germany, Motorola will likely appeal the ruling due to the same patent having been declared invalid in China. LPKF CEO Dr. Ingo Bretthauer said the company will continue to defend its patent.

“The more attractive a patent is, the harder you have to work to defend it,” said the CEO. “We will continue our fight for our patent in China and systematically take action against infringers outside China.”

Moto Edge X30, first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 phone likely to launch on December 9

Motorola has been very active lately with launches in the mobile segment ranging from entry-level to high-end devices. Now it looks like the race for the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 smartphone is heating up and Motorola is trying to get the upper hand by being the first to launch a smartphone with the new chipset. The Lenovo-owned smartphone maker has confirmed that it will be announcing an Edge smartphone with Qualcomm’s latest flagship chip on December 9. This is likely to be the Moto Edge X30 (or just Motorola Edge), but there’s also a possibility of the Motorola G200 launching at the same time.

The teaser doesn’t reveal much more about the device, and a lot is still under wraps, but there are some tidbits that we can gather from the phone’s certification. For starters, its battery certification shows a 5,000mAh cell with a charging capacity of 68.2W, which is one of the highest in Motorola phones. Consumers in China are likely to have many choices in terms of storage as there are reportedly 6GB/8GB/12GB/16GB RAM and 128GB/256GB/512GB storage options. Chen Jin, Lenovo China’s head of mobile division, also revealed that the phone has Gorilla Glass protection on both sides as well as the latest My UX 3.0 software.

Motorola’s Moto G200 is coming to China in January 2021

Motorola officially launched the Moto G100 in March 2021 and released it in the United States in July. Now, the successor to the device -- the Moto G200 -- has been unveiled . The phone has been internally code-named "Yukon/Xpeng." The new smartphone is expected to be launched in China as the Moto Edge S30 and be available for sale in January 2021.

Motorola's upcoming device will have a plastic unibody, with a 6.8 inch LCD full HD+ display featuring an impressive refresh rate of 144Hz. This is much higher than the Moto G100's refresh rate of 90Hz. The Moto G100's Snapdragon 870 5G chipset will also receive a more powerful upgrade, with the G200 expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 888 processor. It will feature 8GB RAM and either 128 GB and 256 GB of storage.

Motorola’s new Moto G Power (2022) keeps long battery life, adds better camera

The Moto G Power (2022) is officially the newest part of Motorola's Moto G family, and the successor to the Moto G Power (2021) that we reviewed early this year. As our review of the earlier model noted, all the key selling points are here, like the long-lasting three-day battery life, huge display, and sturdy design. But on top of that, Motorola also appears to have addressed our complaints about the weak camera performance and mediocre panel, by significantly beefing up both, though it still hasn't brought 5G to the device likely to keep it under $200.

To start with, the new G Power features a 6.5-inch 1600 x 720 IPS display with a 90Hz refresh rate, meaning everything will be smoother than last year's 60Hz panel. It's still not really a bump up from 720p -- 1080p would have been nice given the big screen, but it'll still feel a lot better to use. In terms of weight and dimensions, it's about the same size and tips the scale at about 203 grams. The design is fairly sturdy and is IP52 water-repellent, however, it is not technically waterproof, so don't fully immerse it.
