T-Mobile more than doubles the data it offers on 4-person family plans

T-Mobile is back on the attack against AT&T with a new family plan promotion. From July 30 to September 30, the Uncarrier will offer 10GB of 4G LTE data to families of four who sign up for a family plan for just $100. The data will be shared between all four people, averaging ~2.5GB per person.

Currently, T-Mobile offers a $100 four-person plan with 4GB of 4G LTE data to share for the same price. Once the family runs out of data, they could still keep going, but their download speeds would slow significantly. If your family wanted more than 1GB of 4G data per person, they’d have to pay $140 for 12GB of 4G LTE, averaging 3GB per person. The new promotion offers more than double the original data amount for the same price of $100.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere announced the promotion with tons of fanfare and targeted AT&T, mocking its “Best-ever pricing” for families promotion. Legere says that AT&T’s four-person family plan with 10GB of data costs $160 a month, which is $60 more each month, amounts to $1,440 more over the course of two years. Legere was also quick to point out that AT&T doesn’t offer unlimited data after you run out of those 10GB either and that they’ll most likely slam you with overage charges.

Based on the data we complied while writing our Family plan comparison article, it seems that Legere is basing his numbers off of an AT&T Next plan for four people without a two-year contract, which includes 10GB of shared data. Our research shows that such a plan does indeed cost $160 a month.

He also mentioned that Verizon’s prices for a similar plan are in the same ballpark as AT&T’s. Our data shows that Verizon will charge a family of four between $150 and $170 on the More Everything plan with Edge, which does not have a two-year contract. On this plan, $150 will get you 8GB of data to share, while $170 will get you 12GB of data. Based on our research, Legere’s claims about the difference in price are accurate.

Legere also highlighted other T-Mobile promotions, such as unlimited international data and text, as well as its “Unradio” campaign, which allows users to stream music from most popular apps over the network without siphoning off users’ data.

AT&T just made its FirstNet plans a lot more helpful for first responders
AT&T SatCOLT which is a mobile 5G tower platform.

Wireless smartphone plans are historically confusing and complicated — and this can be especially true when trying to mix and match different plan types. Take AT&T as an example. Ever since the carrier launched its FirstNet wireless service for first responders, families with FirstNet and regular/commercial AT&T plans have had to put up with multiple wireless plans, multiple accounts, and multiple bills. However, starting August 9, AT&T is taking big steps to reduce the headaches and make its FirstNet service offerings much easier to digest.

Created in 2001 and contracted to AT&T in 2017, FirstNet is a wireless network "built with AT&T to specifically to meet the needs of first responders." In the event of a natural disaster, terror attack, etc., it's not uncommon for wireless cell signals to become overloaded and disrupted. FirstNet is designed to remain up and running during such events and gives first responders "superior security, truly dedicated coverage and capacity when they need it and unique benefits they can’t get anywhere else." While that aspect of FirstNet is great, how it's traditionally been billed to people has been anything but.

Ookla's second-quarter market report has just gone live, revealing that T-Mobile still has a commanding lead over rivals Verizon and AT&T when it comes to offering the fastest and most consistent speeds throughout the U.S.

Overall, that's nearly twice as fast as Verizon and AT&T, which clocked in at 59.67Mbps and 54.64Mbps, respectively. The Un-carrier also delivered the most consistent speeds of the bunch, with 85.7% of tests showing at least 5Mpbs download and 1Mbps upload speeds.

Your T-Mobile plan now has bigger gas discounts and international 5G

There are a lot of financial deterrents this year keeping people from planning summer vacations, but T-Mobile is determined to help subscribers take the vacations they've been dreaming of with its newly announced Coverage Beyond initiative. In short, Coverage Beyond aims to reduce the cost of traveling for T-Mobile's most popular coverage plans by giving subscribers three great perks: free 5G data abroad, free streaming while on flights, and a handful of other travel perks like reduced gas prices.

Some of T-Mobile's previous connection efforts gave its customers limited free low-speed data and free texting while abroad. This was a good way to reduce the stress of being out of the country for a short period, but Coverage Abroad ups the ante by offering 5GB of high-speed data to all Magenta Max and Business Unlimited Ultimate plan owners in 210 countries. In countries where it's available, that "high-speed" data may even be 5G. Magenta and most other business plan owners can also count on free high-speed international data, but only in 11 select European countries.
