In an apparent attempt to boost album sales in the face of streaming services like Spotify and Pandora, Sony announced the “Album of the Day” app that is currently exclusive for iPhone users.

The app lets iPhone users download an album from Sony Music Entertainment’s catalog through iTunes at a discount that can go as high as 70 percent. Given away by the name of the app, there will be a discounted album each day, with users getting a notification whenever there is a different album on sale.
The first album to be featured is Michael Jackson’s “Xscape,” which is currently discounted to $6 from its original $10 price point. Upcoming albums will come from artists like Simon & Garfunkel, Santana, Dixie Chicks, Audioslave, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Kings of Leon, Pink, Bob Dylan, Lauryn Hill, The Script, Usher, Meat Loaf, Rodriguez, Sade, Aerosmith, and Alicia Keys.

Sony’s move to release its Album of the Day app isn’t very surprising when you consider Nielsen Soundscan’s report. According to the report, U.S. album sales in the first half of 2014 were down 14.9 percent when compared to the same period last year.
According to Sony, the app originally launched in Germany back in March with “extremely successful results.” It’s unknown whether Sony will experience similar results in the United States, though based on ratings, Album of the Day seems to be off to a decent start.
