A series of leaks have provided some interesting details about a new Sony tablet, and even more intriguingly, a glimpse of both it, and a new smartwatch. The tablet comes as a surprise, but we’ve been hearing rumors about a new, third-generation smartwatch from the company, and this is the first time we’ve seen its design.
The news of a new Sony tablet comes from two sources. The first, an anonymous tip sent to AndroidOrigin.com, provides a breakdown of the device’s potential specification. Apparently, the tablet will be named the Z3 Tablet Compact – oddly without the Xperia brand name attached at the moment – and feature a screen measuring approximately 8-inches. The resolution should be 1080p, and use the same Triluminous and X-Reality technology that has made Sony’s most recent smartphones such a hit.

Powering the Z3 Compact Tablet could be another, slightly faster, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB of RAM, and a total of 16GB internal memory should be onboard. An 8-megapixel camera could be fitted, along with 4G LTE connectivity, and a large capacity battery. Sony’s existing tablet range consists only of the Xperia Z2 Tablet, which we saw at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.
Soon after these specs leaked, a “lifestyle” image so beloved of manufacturers these days leaked out, this time accidentally from Sony itself. It shows the tablet, which looks very sleek, but the person holding the device is also wearing a smartwatch. It’s not the SmartWatch 2, Sony’s current model, but it does seem to show a Sony-style watch face. There’s no indication it runs anything other than Sony’s own smartwatch software, so any talk of it being an Android Wear device is premature.
Sony will be holding a press conference at the IFA tech show next month, where both these new devices could make their public debut, along with the similarly unofficial Xperia Z3 smartphone. Sony’s IFA press conference takes place on September 3.
