New Porsche 911 time: Refreshed “992” generation could debut at LA Auto Show

For a car that still looks roughly the same as it did in 1963, the Porsche 911 receives a fairly consistent stream of updates.

The vastness of the 911 range ensures that a new model debuts at least once a year, and now Porsche is reportedly giving the entire lineup an overhaul.

Motor Trend’s Jonny Lieberman recently tweeted that a new 911 GTS will be unveiled at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The GTS designation usually represents a middle ground between base models and hardcore Porsche supercars, so this is good news for enthusiasts.

But there’s more. Lierbeman claims the GTS will come with a “992” designation, rather than the 991 designation assigned to all current-generation 911 models.

That means Porsche could be ready to kick off a refresh of the model. Given that the first 911 991 models debuted in 2012, the timing is about right. If the rumor proves true, expect this to be a mid-cycle refresh with some tweaking of styling and mechanical bits, rather than a clean-sheet redesign.

Assuming the GTS is the first 992 model, expect the Carrera to get the changes next, followed by the GT3, Turbo, and Targa, all of which debuted more recently. A GT3 RS model will show up at some point as well.
