Mercedes-Benz’s apocalyptic, 12-cylinder G65 AMG will arrive Stateside in 2016

You would think the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG and its twin-turbocharged V8 would be enough to fulfill people’s post-apocalyptic fantasies, but it’s about to be trumped.

The V12-powered G65 AMG has been on sale outside the U.S. since 2012, denying buyers an extra four cylinders’ worth of German performance. However, that will change soon.

Automotive News (sub. required) reports that the G65 AMG will arrive on this side of the Atlantic as a 2016 model.

It should be worth the wait. This converted military vehicle packs the same 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 used in the S65 AMG. In the G-Class, it produces 612 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

Connected to a seven-speed automatic transmission, it will get the nearly 6,000-pound G65 to 62 mph from a standstill in 5.3 seconds and on to a (limited) top speed of 143 mph.

Yet the G65 retains the beefy four-wheel drive system used in other G-Class models, so it’s just as capable of negotiating the Rubicon Trail as it is of winning a stoplight drag race.

All of that capability doesn’t come cheap though. The 2016 G65 AMG is expected to cost around $250,000 when it arrives in U.S. showrooms, likely sometime next year.

Mercedes is planning a major overhaul for the G-Class, so it’s unclear whether the G65 AMG we get in the U.S. will be based on the current version, or will be part of the revamped lineup. Stay tuned for more details.

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its EQ lineup of electric cars with a new SUV model. As the name suggests, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is based on the same platform as the EQS sedan released last year. The two models also share powertrain hardware, styling, and key tech features — including Mercedes’ 56-inch Hyperscreen display.

The EQS SUV adds a third row of seats (for a total of seven) and the taller ride height and driving position that have made U.S. car shoppers fall in love with SUVs. When it reaches U.S. dealerships later in 2022, it should help boost sales of the EQ line.

Mercedes-AMG EQE proves performance EVs are here to stay

Mercedes-Benz is going all-in on electric cars, but it's not abandoning performance. Launching in the U.S. in early 2023, the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4Matic+ (or AMG EQE for short) sedan is the second EV from Mercedes' AMG performance division.

As with most AMG models, this four-door EV is a tuned version of an existing Mercedes, in this case the EQE sedan. Unveiled in September 2021, the EQE slots below the larger EQS sedan in Mercedes' growing EV lineup. The AMG version gets its own powertrain and numerous other hardware changes, plus subtle model-specific styling features.

Ahead of CES 2022, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an electric concept car that pushes the limits of efficiency and range.

The Vision EQXX boasts a claimed range of over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), or about 100 miles more than the current range champ, the 520-mile Lucid Air. Mercedes didn't achieve that by simply using a bigger battery pack. In fact, at 100 kilowatt-hours of usable capacity, the concept car's pack is close in size to the Air's. Instead, Mercedes focused on making every part of the Vision EQXX — from tires to batteries — as efficient as possible.
